P52 Sooooo SLOW (ssd, 32gb ram, i7, nvidia Quadro P3200)

Hi all, I've got a P52 a few months ago, mostly for SolidWorks.

I had before a MacBook pro-2015.

I've got it with the HHD and as a first thing, I've erased it and installed a Samsung SSD 970 EVO myself, keeping the HHD for storage (never used yet), Installing windows on the SSD.

Point is: this machine is SLOW, I can't believe is so slow, I must have done some error.

Even if I'm just doing web development, with an external display plugged my editor (vs code) is noticeably laggy.

If I launch a render it is hard to even just to browsing a webpage.

Not to talk about Solidworks.

So, what are possible solutions, did I had to install a special version of windows?

As I said, coming from mac, I've very little experience with this OS.

Perhaps the SSD since it's the only thing you've changed?

 

Did you install the drivers when you changed the SSD? If you don't already have Lenovo Vantage from the MS store, I would install that as it allow you to update drivers easily.

 

I think I have the exact same config as your's including purchasing with hdd and removing and installing an ssd. I honestly don't push mine too too much, mostly 4k editing is the heaviest this thing ever sees. It does seem a little slow on boot though. Slower than my 3 year old Acer i5 w/ ssd.

 

Laptops with DDR4 and NVMe take longer to initialize than DDR3/SATA. This is why most newer laptops take a couple seconds longer than some older laptops to boot.

 

We have P51 and P52 and in the office, and recently P1's but all of them are responsive. Check your temperatures because out of the box my P1 ran so hot, the clocks were low (2ghz or so) but this was quickly fixed by undervolting. If you have high temps you will quickly throttle and feel the lower performance.

Also, I had a particular bug with one P51 machine, it got the CPU stuck in 800mhz mode no matter what, and you needed to disconnect and reconnect AC power to "unstuck" it.

Finally... your screen is 4K at 30hz? that alone would make the laptop experience feel extremely slow. Did you make a typo or perhaps forgot to set it at 60? or maybe it's an external monitor?

Depending on the task you are doing, make sure you force the GPU usage to be the dedicated nvidia GPU when required. Sometimes applications launch on the intel GPU and can quickly become a sad affair.

Forgot to mention: Use throttlestop for the CPU undervolting. This will help massively if that is your issue. i7's run very hot, even more so with these new 6 core ones.
