It's hard for us to fault newbies for questions we've already seen. After all, they need to know the answer because they haven't seen them. Nonetheless, it is annoying as hell for us to answer the same thing, over and over again. Greatest hits include:
My brand new Thinkpad is so slow, how do I make it faster?
How do I install memory?
My estimated shipping time is X months later? OMG
Do the 6- or 7- cell batteries stick out?
What discounts are there for Lenovo?
For crying out loud, we need an extended FAQ, or at least more stickied threads to combat questions asked one too many times. Have you seen our FAQ lately? It's incredibly outdated! It only talks about T60 widescreens!!!!!! The quality of these forums will continue going down the hill if something isn't done.
This is a petition to add more newbie-accessible material to this section of NBR, and maybe other sections if need be. Support by posting!!!

It really depends. Most of the time stickies are very informative already, but they're ignored by newer members who don't read them. The ASUS forum used to be loaded with stickies and still questions were asked repeatedly and repeatedly.
-
Too many stickies will make it very cluttered. One sticky with links to important threads is a solution but people barely ever read it.
Either way, unless users are smart enough to read stickies or use the search buttons, more stickies is not an option. -
Then let's expand that sorry excuse for a FAQ, and tag it with NOOBS PLEASE READ, or something equivalent. If they don't, we will point them to it, and not have to deal with another 5-page rehash of something discussed last week.
-
Support. Nonetheless there needs to be at least a sticky that gives links to important threads as coriolis. So that if a newbie asks an obvious, anyone can merely post the link to the sticky instead of having to re-explain everything. I definitely think that is the way to go.
-
I vote for one comprehensive sticky to address the issues. If newer members make a new thread about a topic already covered, we can easily refer them back to the sticky thread and let the thread die out.
-
Good Idea, Make me a moderator while you are at it.
-
Seriously, that FAQ is so terrible; if the mods refuse to make more stickies or expand the FAQ, at least delete the damn thing. It's insulting these forums.
-
I support.

mattireland It used to be the iLand..
As I said on a forum that I'm a moderator of to another mod it's pointless having a forum of stickies because you have to scroll down half the page to get to the actual questions and you could always just search for the topic before posting (must tell myself that).
I see your point though - thanks for posting - have to go no though. -
Don't patronize me with your thanks- it means absolutely nothing to me.
In reading my original post more carefully, you will understand that:
1. You may search, I may search, but new users do not. If they did, we wouldn't have this petition. We would not have people asking the same stuff. This is a chronic issue, and it brings down the quality of the forums. You and I may be experienced forum users, but we shouldn't be elitist and assume everyone else is.
2. We can have either more stickies or an expanded FAQ (which would be only one sticky)
3. This is supposed to benefit us current forum users because if new people ask us the same thing, we can point to the FAQ or a specific thread about their topic. In either case, the sticky(ies) serve as some sort of navigation for answers to common questions- in FAQ form or not. So even if the new people don't immediately go to the stickied thread, we at least can refer to it so we don't produce five-page rehashes of things said last week.
4. I suppose you mentioned your experience as mod to further "certify" and increase the "legitimacy" of your opinion. Fine, in that case, I'll agree with the opinion of the mod at the time that you talked to, because you wouldn't have said that to him/her if they didn't think otherwise at some point. I guess since that person's also a mod, their opinion is just as "valid" as yours. I've also run forums before too for a high school debate team a few years back, where I was not simply a moderator, I was an administrator. So I suppose have a "certified" and "legitimate" opinion as well.
I see your point though - thanks for posting. -
Don't like double posting, but this is important enough to bump this petition to the top of the list.
T61 Very Slow
T61 Really Slow
These threads started 2 hours and 36 minutes of each other. If you don't support this petition, you are digging the grave for NBR. -
There's always another option to just not respond to these types of threads in the first place. No response = they get dropped to the back pages rather quickly.
-
Partly the idea of forums is to combine knowledge and help people.. not ignore them?
-
That doesn't work to well because nice ppl who like to help(like me) will actually be willing to explain to a certain extent. If there were a specific sticky that addressed the issue, I could easily post up a link to it instead.
-
See that's wrong because we're supposed to help people on these forums. If we make a sticky FAQ that doesn't suck, we can answer people's questions without wasting time.
-
I understand. I like to help too. A comprehensive sticky would truly make it easier to direct the newer members. I'm just not a fan of all the "newbie" bashing. It's easier just to let their threads die rather then flaming them to death.
-
Even though I don't acutally own a Lenovo or participate in this forum that much, I definitely support this petition. I was looking for some spec info the other day in this forum, and the number of identical threads from noobs asking the same questions really made this forum seem less quality than some of the other manufacturer's forums.
-
I used to bash the noobs for not searching, but I realized they're new to the forum and while we've seen those questions 100's of times, they haven't because they actually don't know the answer. So let's make it more efficient for us to help them!!!

Yeah I know what you are saying. I noticed that especially today. There were several threads today that had the same subject, and I was surprised at how the creators of them could have missed each other's threads.
-
I PMed ZaZ already to help us with this.
-
Good luck with that. Me and xnviews got shot down by zaz awhile back... http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=132358&highlight=frequently+asked+questions

I don't think he was against it in its entirety. He was against some of the questions you guys suggested, and although agreeing that an expansion was in order, he never followed through. I encourage all supporters of this petition to go PM ZaZ so he'll never forget again.
-
more stickies.
another stickie should be how to locate your part numbers. -
Everybody, PM ZaZ!!!! Copy/paste the official PETITION message:
-
Here's a suggestion. Since you know the answers to these common questions, why not write your own FAQ (or provide a link) with answers? If your thread is excellent (means simple, informative and well referenced), it would be stickied by the mods or it maybe even added on to the existing FAQ. You will directly help the people (instead of depending on someone else to do it) and your effort won't go unappreciated. Think about it.
-
Oh, that's been done. The mods don't do anything though. Those don't get stickied. They just get pushed back into history.
-
Can you link me to your FAQ post(s), please?
-
Make Johnny a MOD!
-
lol ZaZ is going to love that.
I'm all for a (one) comprehensive faq. -
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=132358&highlight=frequently+asked+questions
Examples are all over that thread. -
I don't see any post by you in that thread. I did not find any post with FAQs and corresponding answers either. Did you link me to the right thread(s)?
-
I didn't make a post in the thread. But other people did and they proposed new FAQ questions, to which ZaZ failed to expand the FAQ with.
-
I think the real problem is that there is no power delegated to forum users. I understand that NBR is a rather large forum, but if moderators were appointed as the site grew, this little predicament wouldn't exist. Personally, I think that there should be a minimum post requirement as well as recognition for contributions, such as guides made, in order to be eligible to become a mod. Anyhow, either ZaZ needs to update the FAQ, or he needs to allow people to be able to create stickies so we can create our own.
-
I actually have had intentions of making my own FAQ thread for awhile. I am just waiting for my T61 to arrive. I know I've been passing around a fair amount of second hand information on clean installs and such, but I don't want to make my own thread giving advice until I can give first hand information.
I figure even if my FAQ thread gets pushed down into history, I'll post my link in my sig and then I can start to responding to peoples questions by just saying "Click the link in my sig for your answer." -
We need to make a sticky on what the UWB adapter is and how it relates to WUSB. I can't tell you how many times I have answered this question.
-
I wonder if anyone actually has PM'd ZaZ with the official message??
-
I have. You guys better.
-
Nice, sounds like a good temporary fix. I can help you with it if you like.

Someone start a poll and find out
