Hey guys, I have a quick question. I just bought my Y580 a week ago or so, and it's about to come in the mail. It is the 209945U model (so if anybody can comment or whether or not that was a good choice, I'd appreciate it - I don't know anything about rpm and stuff. It's the 500 GB 7200 rpm).

Anyway, I am going to be using this laptop for school and gaming. I like RPG and adventure games like skyrim (Btw - excited for dawnguard ), but I also play games like warcraft III. What is the best PAID antivirus that uses the least system resources? I'm torn between bitdefender 2013 and webroot, but webroot looks kind of suspicious and kind of unprofessional - if there is one that is better than either of these, feel free to suggest it. On my last computer I was using AVG free and I got a rootkit, so please don't suggest free software as I am willing to pay.

Also, do I need antivirus or do I need internet security suite too? Kind of confused with this and what is the best. I don't want my new Y580 to be super slow because of resource usage.

    Thanks!

    Wrong forum

There is an entire separate forum dedicated to antivirus software.

    Here is the link:

Try I'm buying a new laptop, an ideapad, and posting on this ideapad forum to find out what other ideapad users are using for their antivirus . Antivirus performance (resource wise) is a completely valid question to ask on a laptop specific basis. I've already done research on my own, now I want real user feedback on my specific laptop/Y580 series because resource use in reviews is completely irrelevant because not everyone is using thee same system. Add to the fact that most reviews are the internet are reviewing a product they're selling, it's better to get feedback from people (who again) are using the computer model you'll be using. Now if you're done being a smartass, you can answer my question and not post if you're not willing to answer.

It amazes me how completely unfriendly people like you, on a computer forum (on which you probably think you're the "cool guy"), can be. If you don't have the answer to a question then don't reply.

The free Microsoft Security Essentials is actually very good. Quite lightweight as well.

It's not about being cool or a smartass.

It's being around the forums for so long and seeing the same kinds of people asking the same questions over and over again. Especially since you posted the exact same thing in the owners thread, but then decided that your question was so important that it deserved it's own thread. You honestly think you're helping yourself by asking to be spoon fed?

Take a little time to do your own research and try to learn something. In the amount of time you've wasted here with the one incorrect response you've gotten (MSE is free and apparently not what you're looking for), you could have read up and had a concise answer from the antivirus forum.

Don't use some stupid reason about how antivirus software is relevant to the 580 or ideapads specifically. You're insulting yourself.

If you take the time to do the reading yourself, you'll find it's a lot better than asking for such generic information. You will a thusly learn something. There is a reason why people don't respond. Most of the them know that half of these questions have been answered on this forum or other ones. If it is something very specific or something that needs new discussion, then it would make sense.

There is nothing more annoying on an information forum than answering a question and then two pages later finding someone else asking the same thing.

As far as paid antivirus goes, you really don't need it. Based on the way you've asked your question and a lack of a very specific feature set, you will be fine with MSE, Avast, Or Avira.

As far as your assumption that I haven't done my own research, I have. I've spent hours looking at comparisons between antivirus suites, but the vast majority derive from reviews that aren't really all that great when it comes to reviewing system resource usage. As for bitdefender 2013, it's a new product and I wanted to see if anyone is using it. FYI, when you google antivirus forum, or even spend some time looking for one - it takes you to the forums of specific companies. Also, looking at this site, it must have escaped my view, but I found it now.

It wouldn't hurt next time to not make assumptions about what I've already done and be a little more humble. I asked a simple question, I didn't need your attitude. But I do thank you for pointing me into the right direction - that forum looks very helpful.

Yeah, next time simply provide a link to the correct forum... or not. But do leave out the rude and condescending commentary.

Forum etiquette is not a given nor is it innate. We all have to start somewhere, yes?

Nheroux, I apologize on behalf the forum at large.
