    Will partitioning the drive using he VIsta utlity (not 3rd party package like Partiton Magic) mess up the recovery data?

    No, only if you mess with the ~6.5 GB partition (that is the recovery partition)

    just wondering, does the recovery cd put back the recovery partition if i deleted it?

    Yes, the recovery CD will put everything back to factory state including the hidden recovery partition.
