I'm considering either a T400s or X301, but my budget does not extend to the SSD models. The 1.8" HDDs are of concern on two counts:

    1) Performance?
    2) Later upgrade options? Particularly size, e.g. being able to upgrade to 320GB or more in future would be a huge plus.

Does anybody have positive experiences with either of these laptops with the HDD? Are you using Intel's turbo memory (offered on X301 in specs, not T400s specs)?

    Thanks

I don't have an lenovo/ibm, but i use to have an netbook with an 60gb 1.8" hdd, I use to get a max of 30mb/s on hdtune, and it did not appear to noticeably slow my netbook down.

Thanks Tinderbox, but I'm really interested in the Lenovo's specifically. I'm a software engineer and do a fair amount of work with heavy build tools and VMs. The t400s looks very attractive, it's just the disk issue...

There was a thread here about this where people posted benchmarks. Try searching it here.

1.8" HDDs are uncommon, and the current max is 250G (at $40 extra). If there was a larger one released in few months/years, you'd be able to upgrade it, but it would have to still be 1.8" (again, currently all 320G drives are 2.5"). You could also upgrade to a SSD at a later date, when they're bigger/cheaper.

Alternatively, you could pay the same $40 to upgrade to the 64G SSD, and then get the HDD caddy to put in the optical bay, and do SSD+HDD for speed and capacity.

    Hope that helps.

Well I have T400s with 120 gb 1.8" HDD. Performance is very comparable to 2.5" HDD thanks to equal 5400 rpm. But you might observe some difference when you transfer large files (more than 1 gb) but not that significant. Battery life is good as well I get around 4.30 to 5 hrs on an average. Haven't had a SSD myself though.

You can pick up an x-18m2 when they are more available and upgrade yourself.

The SSDs are samsung and toshiba from lenovo. You can search for some performance discussion on here.

I hope guys you dont mind if I ask you if there is any diffrence between 1,8"SSD and 2,5" SSD in performance ?

I believe1,8" must be smaller and lighter :p

That's what I'd do. The difference between an HDD (especially a 1.8" model) and a decent SSD is night and day.

There's no difference in performance between a 1.8" SSD and the equivalent 2.5" model (I for example am using a 1.8" Samsung SLC SSD w/ 2.5" adapter in my x200T). However, not all SSDs are offered in 1.8" versions.

Speaking of which, when will these be available? Does anyone know? I know the X-25 G2 is out, but I can't find official details anywhere about the 1.8" G2.

Please point me to where it says anything on that page about release dates for *either* drive.

I already know technical details, I want to know information about the *release* timing...

I was merely answering your question re "I can't find official details anywhere about the 1.8" G2". If the question is only about "release timing", then I can't help with that.

    My original question:

I thought it was pretty clear I was asking about the release info, but my apologies if not. Anyone else know?
