Unfortunately the x210 isn't out yet but i need a new laptop sooner so im thinking of getting the t410s. Ive just seen its only 0.2kg heavier than my 1.6kg 8-cell X61.

However i was wondering what performance would i see over my X61? In addition, how much more performance would the t410 be?

Lets benchmark the X61 at '20' then you can say t410s at 55 and t410 at 70 for example.

    My current X61:
    2.2GHz T7500
    4GB DDR2 667
    80GB (this *could* be 5400 RPM :( )

    T410s:
    i5-540M Processor (2.53GHz, 3MB L3, 1066MHz FSB)
    4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory
    Possibly get an Intel x25-e

    T410:
    i7-620M Processor (2.66GHz, 4MB L3, 1066MHz FSB)
    4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory
    Possibly get an Intel x25-e

My uses will be a lot of computer programming, analysing network packets for my uni final year project. Real-time programming to be exact.

    Thanks in advance

You can't put a x25-m in the T410s, only a x18-m, which is impossible to find right now.

They also don't make the x-25e (extreme) in a 1.8" form factor. However, Lenovo does seem to offer an 80GB x-18M for the T410s right now.

Read THIS detailed overview and performance review for Clarkdale. It should give you a good idea of what the T410s and T410 will offer.

But basically, the T410s and T410 will be nearly identical in performance. The T410 has a 260MHz and 1MB L3 cache advantage, but the impact is relatively low. Both will outpace your T7500 clock for clock. The newer Intel graphics should also be substantially faster than your x3100, but it's still not a gaming chip. Additionally, heat management should be much better on the T410s and T410 than your x61.

The way the lineup shakes out now it seems that the T410s is superior in almost all ways to the T410. Therefore, if you appreciate weight and can afford the price difference, I would lean toward the T410s. I'd also consider sticking with the i5-520M, the extra 133MHz is not worth the $185 premium Lenovo is currently charging for the i5-540M (your money is better spent elsewhere); if this drops closer to the $32 upgrade is should be, my opinion would change.

I don't understand, you seem to be contradicting yourself. Why is the T410s superior if it will have almost identical performace to the T410? Can you elaborate on reasons why?

    Thanks

The T410s is over a pound lighter than the T410. It is also made with higher quality materials. Also, according to Matt Kohut's post, the T410s will offer switchable graphics (albeit not configurable now) while the T410 will not. If you can achieve nearly identical performance in a smaller/lighter package that means superior to me.

Thanks for your detailed reply! Just had a read of the article and it does point out some interesting things!

How long do you reckon before t410s are being stocked up on ebay? I need a new laptop within the next 3-4 weeks and don't fancy purchasing off lenovo.com to then see a guy on ebay selling it for $400 less! :p

Its been along time sine i got my X61 so i'm a little out of the loop. When i spec'd up on the website it came to around $1,400 as i opted for the 80GB SSD and 4GB. Hopefully may see some on ebay for $1100-1200 soon!

considering how often lenovo offers coupons (check slickdeals.net), you'll probably find a better buying from lenovo directly than from ebay.

Wait for the updated tabook with preconfigured T410s models (should be any day now). Then start Googling the models that fit your needs. Some of the resellers (e.g. Provantage) may have them at a fairly deep discount in the near future.

Also, Lenovo may put up some coupons fairly soon (although I'd expect it to be at least a few weeks).

Strange, I thought the US always gets the good stuff before Canada but Lenovo Canada has the T410s on their site now with the i5-540 (+ CAD$50 over the i5-520) and the Nvidia switchable graphics (+ CAD$125 over the integrated graphics).

I don't know where the OP is from, but if Canada already has these options I'd guess they will be available elsewhere very soon if they're not available already.
