    Hi guys,

I from Brazil and i own a x61. I planning to buy a T420s, since my family are going to US on the begin of May(the price are so lower there =) ) . I have a few questions that i might need to know the answer:

    1) How long does it take, in medium cases, since i made a order and it get delivered(in a US address, of course)? I asking that because they are going to stay on US until 19 of may.

    2) My plan is to buy the t420 with a 320gb hdd 7200rpm(i will use it on ultrabay slim for backup) and buy a intel ssd 320 300gb
separately. Will it fit? Someone did that already?

    thats the model:

    http://www.buy.com/prod/intel-ssdsa...-state-drive-oem-box/q/loc/101/220601173.html

    3) Also, and planning to buy a separated 4gb ram dimm! Any suggestions?

    4) And one last thing: can you suggest good places to buy both the ssd and the ram memory online?

    Thanks very much =D

    Bye

    1)

Usually it take two week for the laptop to arrives on the doorstep, however there might be some cases when Lenovo ran into unexpected problem, such as supply problem, too much demand, or labor shortage. Finally there might be problem such as custom. If you need to have you laptop ready on a certain date, it might be a good idea to buy pre-configure model from Lenovo resellers. They deliver the product more quickly since the laptop is premade and in the US already.

    2)

    Yes it will fit

    4)

I use newegg for my upgrade and computer needs.

If you know where your family is going to stay ahead of time, or have a secure location to have it shipped, order it before they even arrive. There have been occasions where (if a high-demand part becomes difficult to source) it has taken a month for a ThinkPad to arrive. This is most often around Christmas-time, but if any electronics are sourced from Japan, supply may be constrained due to the earthquake-tsunami.

Here is Lenovo's link to estimated ordering/ship dates. Note that under normal conditions, 2-2.5 weeks is a possible wait time.

Yes, thats my intention! i will send it to my family house in US... i just not bought it yet because i waiting for the new configurations models.. But maybe, i'm waiting for nothing because:

1- i am a CS student, and my main OS is Linux, that means i cant get any advantage of the optimus technology(or can i?), neither i plan to buy a msata configuration, because i think there will be certainly drivers problems. So, by the end, i just waiting for the i7 processor, but will they out in a configuration without optimus/msata? Any speculations of dates?

    Thanks =)

You won't be able to use the Optimus technology under Linux. nVidia does not support it.

If you do need 3D graphics capabilities beyond the Intel HD graphics, it is possible within BIOS (on an Optimus-equipped laptop) to just set the unit to "discrete graphics", which will leave the nVidia NVS 4200M GPU on all of the time. This is assuming they come out with an Optimus-equipped T420s prior to your order. The Intel HD graphics are quite capable of anything short of gaming (and should be able to do simple games well if you tweak the settings around).

I am not a game entusiast... so i dont think that it will be a problem to me =)

And what about msata? Is it compatible with linux? Or its better just buy a 300gb ssd from intel? In terms of performance

i mean about the internal component. Eg: i know that cpu on t420s is soldered, and t420 is socketed.. Stuff like that.. that makes t420 more durable?

Durability should be the same between embedded and socketed CPUs. Traditionally the T4x0s has been less durable than the corresponding T4x0, but given the manufacturing flaws that plagued the T400s/T410s, it's hard to tell whether the reduction in durability was due to the weight-saving design differences.

The T420s is not significantly slimmer and lighter than the T420. To me, the T420 is both less expensive and more practical.

That's generally my thought as well. I can't justify the price premium of the T420s over the T420; and with the money one saves, it's possible to upgrade the T420 either in features or performance.

The new T420s with the i7 processor has been released. So far it looks like it only comes with the Optimus graphics processor. Wonder if that will be changed soon.
