There's a thin matte black plastic sheet under the keyboard keys. Mine has developed air pockets under that sheet and when I type the keys press on the sheet and cause a plasticky crackling crumpling sound. Anyway to flatten out the plastic sheet?

What keyboard is this o.o? I guess you could pop the air bubbles? But I'd request a new keyboard.

T61 keyboard. Bought my laptop Nov of 2008. I've changed the keyboard twice already but always the air pockets will develop.

It is a membrane that keeps fluid off the key circuitry during a spill. Also makes the keyboard look clean looking down, instead of seeing the metal framework underneath.
What sort of conditions do you use your laptop in? Is it constantly running hot -
Is humidity prone to cause this problem? That would make sense.

Laptop doesn't run hot and i don't use it for long hours at a time. BTW my last replacement already had small airpockets under the spacebar from the get go. I live in Singapore where it is a bit humid but these problems don't affect my friends who have T42s or T60s.

I have noticed this problem from time to time on my R61 keyboard (mainly the shift and Fn keys). I just thought it was something that happens with wear after a while. I have been pretty rough on my keyboard. It gets used alot and it does get pretty hot sometimes. I cant really tell any difference in typing on it from when it was new. The keys that get used the most do have a noticeable shine to them
. Other then the noise you described and the key shine it still works great. I wouldn't worry about something so insignificant as long as its working fine. I still prefer typing on my thinkpad keyboard compared to other laptops/computers.

Yes Hrjustin, exactly the same in my case, always the same place, under the Fn, Shift, Alt keys. A little under the spacebar.
Anyhow is there anyway to flatten these 'pimples' out? -
Btw a little off topic but my I've noticed my bios has the 'Security>Passwords>Passphrase' option greyed out/unselectable and also the 'Security>Passwords>Password Reset Service' refers me to set the service in ThinkVantage Recovery Media but there is no such option. Is it the same for you?
