I have done a Vista Business 64 clean install on my T400. With the clean install I did NOT reinstall the factory installed DVD-decoder .

I understand there is no built in dvd-decoder with VB64
I have Windows Media Player 11 installed.
I have installed K-Lite Codec full version.

Should I be able to play a movie DVD with the K-Lite codec, or do I still need a dvd-decoder?

When I put a DVD in the drive it spins up then stops. If I go my computer, then to the dvd drive, I can "explore" the contents of the DVD, but it gives me the audio and video ts folders only.

Ideally, when I put in a movie dvd the computer will give me a pop up window asking me if I want to play with WMP.

    Thanks for the help.

Go to Control Panel -> Autoplay-> DVD movie. in a drop down menu choose play with a Media Player (or whatever you want)

Thanks eney. I think that did the trick. I guess the K-Lite codec contains the proper dvd-decoder, as it looks like I can play a dvd without any issues.

I think you should be able to play a DVD with just Vista Business itself, without codecs. At least I kind of remember it worked for me even before installing WinDVD (that comes with the T500).

Download VideoLan Player (VLC) - it plays everything and you don't have to download and install a Codec pack of dubious legality.

Apparently that is not the case. According to other posts here on NBR, Vista Business is the one OS which does NOT come with dvd decoder.

I assume the K-Lite codecs I had previously installed enable me to play dvds.

The K-Lite codecs seem to be very complete and reliable. I don't like too many different players on my computer, so I just use WMP for everything.
