Laptop sounds like it's dying whenever I try to play a DVD... by which I mean the disk drive spins up to full activity, stays there, goes back down to nothing, and immediately spins up again --- infinitely.

It's gotten to the point where I just rip the DVD image of whatever I'm trying to play and mount it virtually-- but I was wondering if there was any reason for this/anyone else experienced this.

How are you supposed to view DVDs in say a library? Or anywhere there are other humans for that matter, the disk drive gets ridiculously loud.

Edit: It's the same noise (presumably) you get when you first insert a CD/DVD and it spins up as it's reading it... only when playing DVD movies it does this over and over and over ad infinitum.

Some DVD drives are noisier than others.

As I recall there are firmware fixes for drives; firmware updates can sometimes help with this.

I think there's a quiet setting in the BIOS for the optical drive.
