I ran msconfig and the attached picture shows the startup programs. I'm not sure which are necessary and which not. Could someone tell me which can be checked-off (remove the 'X')? I want to keep it minimal. Thanks!

(the subject title should read "which .... can be CHECKED OFF", i.e. not just turned off but it will not run upon turning on the computer)

Here are some thoughts about your list.

    • jusched is a java update scheduler, that can go without a second thought :)
    • reader_sl makes Adobe Reader start faster, another one you probably don't need.
    • qttask is something I would turn off. But if memory serves me correctly you are better or turning it off in the settings themselves, as there should be a QT icon that comes along this one ... but you can of course kill it off this list as well.

This I found on a first look. There are some things in the list I know little about, but maybe someone else could also point out some items to remove.

As an owner of a T61, I had seen many of the entries in my own computer when I first got it.

Access connections, power manager and other ThinkVantage tools can be disabled for sure without causing you any troubles. If you have the fingerprint reader set up and enabled on Windows login, then I would keep it as Lenovo offers great a fingerprint reader.

Your Adobe Reader is outdated btw. Get FileHippo's updater to keep you up to dates with the softwares.

Do you use Access Connections to manage your wifi? If yes then you might want to keep it.

Why do you have avgtray.exe turned off? Do you use AVG antivirus or another product? Or none at all?

I usually use the Thinkvantage blue button to get wireless connection, that's Access Connection, right? But I can always press that button to get connection, so what difference does it make whether to have Access Connection unchecked in the Start Up list?

As for AVG, I use AVG only manually, not scheduled, and not automatic constantly running, so I checked off avgtray.exe.

What about scheduler_proxy? And the others in the beginning of the list? (there is one without name)
