Can I get a better deal? Should I consider something else? (no gratuitous Lenovoa bashing please)

This is the first week I've looked at Lenovos. I'm guessing that the current "weekly deal" for the PC shown below is about as good as it gets. $839 is the "deal". As an AICPA member I get two benefits, a slight price drop to $809 and access to a sales phone number where I go directly to a person. I plan to shell out $84 for the 2nd and 3rd year warranty extension and $200 for the Plextor 256GB msata ssd which looks like the easiest upgrade ever.

I'm 6' 4" and weigh 280, so the weight doesn't bother me. Being a retired CPA I actually appreciate having the numeric keypad. I WANT high resolution and need very mild gaming graphics, Diablo 3 being the most graphic intensive game I have played. I want the convenience of a DVD drive for movies. I only need the battery on infrequent plane trips.

This looks like a fine machine for you. My son and I have Lenovo systems and they've worked perfectly. We both use external mice (hate trackpads) so can't speak to all the folks complaining about that.

    Cheers,

Thanks, panzer06. The trackpad seems to be a real concern but, even on the plane I used a mouse on the top of my leg. My Alienware M11x had a decent trackpad and there were times that I was glad to have it. Part of my going larger on the laptop is a plan to finally get a smartphone with Android 4.2 which may be my go to plane time waster.

Cost. With the lowest i5 processor and 1600 x 900 resolution it costs $265 more. (with $75 off). I might go for the lower resolution M14x for the same or lower cost because I do like the Alienware M11x that I had.

You plan on replacing this laptop via warranty if it breaks.. You should look up Lenovo's support.

Yeah, if it's worse than my Dell experiences of denying and not fixing obvious problems, I'll be surprised. I'm an old-timer so I believe in customer loyalty. I bought dozens of machines over two decades and saw their decline over many years. I don't really expect Lenovo to be much better, but I hope they are not worse. I'm not even blaming the vendors; the great mass of consumers decided to spurn customer service in favor of saving a dollar on the front end. I am counting on Lenovo to have a better response to targeted influence makers, CPA's; or at least I hope so.

My experience: Receive Y500 May 1st.. Laptop breaks May 24.. Mail out May 24...Ask for refund May 24... Told 4-5 business days... Way past yet Nothing (June 15)... Call Lenovo (8th time on my cell phone for this... few more times on my home phone)... Told no later June 19th... (I have a freeze on the payment anyways because I knew they'd back door me)... Today is June 22nd and the two Lenovo reps I was "helped" by will not respond to my emails or voice mails. I called corporate offices and left two messages.. no response... Now, I don't have a laptop for summer session C... thanks Lenovo, thanks.

We get it, we get it.

Seriously, anyone who's read ANY of the threads here knows about your problems. It's sad, no need to keep repeating it though.

I'm quite happy you'll have no computer for summer session, means you'll be leaving us in peace.
