Hi there,
I just purachsed some DVD-R cd's to create a recovery cd set for my laptop. When I was about to start I was confronted with this message:
"Product Recovery disks enable you to restore your computer to it's factory-installed state. Note DVD-RAM is not supprted for disk 1 of the Product Recovery Set."
What does the DVD-RAM mean? Does that mean I can't use a dvd-r for disk one? And instead use a cd-r? I am not sure what to do. Please help as I have never done this before.
Thanks to those who reply.
Paul

DVD-RAM is not the same as DVD-R. You can use DVD-R or CD-R for disk 1.

I thought you can only use a CD-R for disk 1, and then you use EITHER 1 DVD or 5 (or is it 6) CD-Rs to complete the recovery set....

Seriously, why it won't work ?? The procedure does not claim that it needs a CD (instead of DVD) so i think it will work. -

Is there a reason that the "Startup Disc" will not boot if it is a DVD ? -
This guy's post does also, http://www.lenovoblogs.com/insidethebox/?p=59#comment-10450 -
I don't see why it would not work with two DVDs...I think it is more of a "you only need 700MBs for the fiurst disk, so why waste a DVD" kind of thing. If you have a DVD Rom device, it is as bootable as a CD-Rom device.

The recovery set will burn on DVDs, no problem.I haven't tried booting the first DVD however.
I think the entire recovery procedure is a waste of time as long as you have the $5 Vista Anytime Update DVD. The factory image on the new Lenovos is full of junk you wouldn't want anyway. My brother just bought and R61 from Circuit City and by default it takes probably 5 minutes to fully boot! There was a trial version of Office, Norton, MS SQL Sever (good grief!), and many other things I don't even remember.
Burn the recovery disks just so you can say you did it, then blow away the entire factory image including the recovery partition! Just make sure you use the ABR utility to backup your Vista activation code and reinstall Vista. Optionally download the Lenovo Update tool from the Lenovo website if you like the Thinkvantage tools (I really wanted the Power Manager and of course all the hot keys.)
BTW the latest T61 and R61 BIOS image fixes the brightness OSD. -
i burned my set of recovery discs yesterday for my x61.. my stupid external drive couldnt read my tdk cd-r so i used two sony dvd-r instead.. it's quite easy and fast
