These two models are identical, yet they have a different model numbers. What's the difference?

Nothing except for the model numbers. It's Chinese logic and makes perfect sense.

The 766317U lists alot of extra software:
-
7663-13U software:
PC Doctor, ThinkVantage Access Connections, ThinkPad Utilities, ThinkVantage System Migration Assistant, Diskeeper Home Edition, Norton Internet Security (90 days subscription), ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery, Adobe Reader, Fingerprint Software, ThinkVantage Client Security, Lotus Notes Stand-alone Client license, ThinkVantage System Update, Google Picasa, ThinkVantage Productivity Center with Away Manager, Multimedia Center for Think Offerings, Windows Live Search, Windows Live Toolbar
7663-17U software:
Adobe Acrobat Reader, PC Doctor, Sun Java Runtime Environment, ThinkVantage Access Connections, ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery, ThinkVantage Client Security, Lotus Notes Stand-alone Client license, ThinkVantage Productivity Center, ThinkVantage System Update, Google Picasa, Norton Internet Security 2007 (90 days subscription) (OEM), Diskeeper 9.0 Home.
lol supposedly different run times (3.8 vs 4.0) despite every single option being identical. Costcentral also list the opticals differently, but they are actually the same. Could very well be the case w/software listings and (obviously) run times too.
