What is the Best Way to get 4GB for a brand new laptop with Turbo Memory (Cheapest)?

    1) Buy 4GB from Lenovo
    2) Buy 1x2GB from Lenovo, and 1x2GB from NewEgg.com
    3) Get base 1x1GB from Lenovo, throw it out, and get 2x2GB from NewEgg.com
    4) Get base 512MB from Lenovo, throw it out, order 2x2GB and Intel Turbo Memory from NewEgg.com

Buy the 4 gigs from Lenovo. Heck, at only ~$800 bucks this is a steal!

You have four options with four distinct prices. Just calculate which one ends up cheapest. Hint: its not either of the first two.

Anyway, check out Fry's/Outpost. They tend to have the best RAM deals.

Last option is not valid, you must purchase at least 1GB from Lenovo in order to add Turbo Memory to your configuration.

In the third option he is buying the ITM and 4GB from newegg and just trashing the 512MB stick from Lenovo.

No he's not. You cannot purchase 512MB and ITM, you must purchase at least 1GB in order to add Turbo Memory to your configuration.

I suggest getting the 512mb from lenovo and buy 4gb from frys (about $170). Then wait at least until SP1 comes out before buying turbo memory. As of right now, you won't get any kind of performance increase. In fact, a lot of things are actually slower with turbo memory.

wow, that's not a bad price at all on the 4 gigs.

I have read articles that back up what 123456 said that current gen laptops are not able to utilize as Intel had hoped and that it can even hurt performance. I am just curious if this was said because they were using it for ready drive, or ready boost, or both? And if it was both, was that part of the reason because the place it was reading it from was the same place it had to write it back to thus fighting itself.

Do you know about this Hot Ram Deal thread?

Personally, [and what i did] i would buy the lowest density ram from the notebook manufacturer and just upgrade the ram myself.

As of right now, turbo memory doesn't has bad software support. Vista doesn't know how to properly utilize it. It doesn't know what files should be written to it. Also, I heard there were BSOD problems with it as well.

probably due to files needing to be written to it, and the speed just not being there backing things up until it finally just crashed the system, or poorly managed I/O management could do that as well. Then you always have the possibility that Intel just screwed up and made a product that is not 100% compat with it's other product.

Get the 512 from Lenovo, rip it out the machine and put in your 4 GB of Newegg. Leave the Turbo Memory, really, you don't want the BSOD's and freezes I have with it. (I just disabled it.)

At the time it might become usefull you can buy an 4 GB Turbo Memory Module for the same price as now the 1 GB ;)

the cheapest way is by using option 4, but the best way would be to buy the ITM from lenovo with 512.

Reason why I say this is because if you have BSOD problems, lenovo will back you up.

I would think that the lenovo's wouldn't have the BSOD problems, or why would they sell it? Maybe they have created their own drivers for it...? I have always been told that lenovo laptops were pretty high quality, so I just can't see them continuing to sell a product that has known issues like that.

    Not to upset Intel?
HP and Sony just told Intel to go forth and multiply (rightfully so).

Skip turbo memory and just buy 4GB of ram for it from Kingston. I've got 4GB of the Kingston recommended ram in mine and it's doing great. Part number is KTL-TP667/2G for the 2GB stick. This isn't their value ram that a lot of people complain about. It's been working great for me. I was able to get 6GB of ram for $347 shipped from onsale.com. 4GB for my machine and an extra 2.5GB for the wifey's T61.

Looks like he meant to say 4th option, where he is getting the Turbo memory and 4 Gig from Newegg. This is a valid option. I've heard it's going for under $30. The 52 stick could be sold for what he pays for the Turbo memory.

So the funny thing is- if ITM is upgradable, couldn't you just go out there and buy 4GB of it, and it'd help load stuff faster?

It's actually an Intel card that is supported by Santa Rosa. It's not simply flash memory like an SD card. Intel also has drivers for it.

I saw a video on You tube where it makes a huge difference coming out of hibernation. Really though if you have 4gb of ram you don't need it.
