If i do not configure a x61 with turbo memory, can I add it myself later? Does it fit in the regular memory slot, or somewhere else?

"Turbo" memory, also called Turbo Cache by nVidia or Hypermemory by ATI is dynamically borrowed RAM from the system RAM, so I'm afraid your question doesn't make much sense; video cards are either dedicated, integrated, or both. (most powerful being dedicated, weakest being integrated)

Dedicated cards have their own memory that cannot be upgraded. Integrated cards borrow system RAM, and hybrid dedicated/IGP (integrated graphics processors) GPUs typically have a small amount of their own memory along with the capability to borrow from the system RAM as well.

What you can do is upgrade your laptops RAM, and your GPU might automatically utitilize more RAM. When I upgraded my laptop with 1GB of RAM, my Radeon jumped from 64MB of memory to 128MB.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe that the Turbo Memory Card goes into one of your laptop's PCIe slots, so, yes, you can add a Turbo Memory Card at a later date.

i think the poster meant INTEL turbo memorym in which case, he can possible add it later since it's just a mini pci module. however, where to buy one is another whole different issue.

I haven't seen a whole lot of positive reviews of the Intel Turbo Memory or Vista's Ready Boost technology... so I am not sure that it matters so much (for sustained large file access the hard drive would actually be faster than turbo memory). From what I've read it only helps when you have a slow hard drive.

That said I'm not totally sure if there is a difference between the software that turbo memory vs what ready boost does but I think they are pretty similar. If they really are then you could buy a PCMCIA SD card reader and install a SD card permanently, turn Ready Boost on and bam, homemade turbo memory... you might even be able to get a bit more flash too.

Check out: This PCMCIA SD Card Reader

and here's a link to some good SD cards: SD Cards from NewEgg

This technique should also work for people who have older laptops that don't support Intel Turbo Memory but have Vista installed like the T60's.

The Intel drivers for the Turbo Memory aren't working to well right now.

Heres another thread I made not to long ago.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=126154

And you should be able to add it later on since its mini PCIe. I don't think any vendors carry them though, not yet at least.

So when do you think we will start seeing turbo memory pcie modules at newegg?

What does straight onto the motherboard mean? PCI slots are part of the mobo, right?

They don't know what they're talking about. (Often, the norm with reps in general) It can be removed and changed with other mini-pci-e crads.

You'll get "homemade turbo memory" but at a performance cut. The read/write times of even the most high end sd cards are only about half the speed of Turbo Memory.

Oh... one more thing. This is the answer to the original question: http://shopper.cnet.com/flash-memory/intel-turbo-memory-card/4014-8897_9-32454735.html?tag=coco

I didn't become "Notebook Consultant" today for nothing ya know ;)

Also remember there are other things besides Readyboost that the turbomemory can supposedly do (such as with the hibernate support and all that). So a flash drive setup as readyboost is not the same as turbo memory.

Still it can be an option you could add later, it is just if stores will stock it. It is a Mini-PCIe card that fits into a slot next to the Wifi. Same sort of idea as a memory slot or the prior Mini-PCI slots for modems and Wifi in centrino notebooks.

ummm, did you click on the link in my post above? Stores do stock it.

Yup, When I first ordered back in may I think the option was like $24.95 from lenovo, but now it is $50 since they lowered the base price.

Who knows, I may add it later or not, for now I am just going to put the money I could have spent on TM towards 2gb of Memory :)
