I've searched Google (forum search seems to be turned off) and I can only find instances of power brick "squealing" when the computer is in use.

Today I just received a replacement adapter from Lenovo and it's exactly the same as the old one. It makes a squeaky/crackling sound when the computer is powered off (or unplugged altogether), but when the computer is powered on and plugged in the adapter is totally silent. Anyone else have this issue? I'm fine with the sound as long as it's supposed to be there.

    I've got a T61p with the 90w adapter.

So the power brick was making noise when you opened it from the mail? Is the noise obvious?

I have the 90W and it's silent in use and not in use.

    Hey, kgbeezr.
My power brick also squeals when the laptop is powered off. I think it is supposed to be like this. I've never actually thought of it to be a "defect." The cpu whine while on battery, on the other hand, is annoying to me and doesn't seem right.

I mean once I plug it into the wall, then it starts making noise until i've powered on my computer, then it goes silent. Had it been making that noise as I opened the box, I would have thrown it down and ran.......very fast. :p The sound isn't loud really, but it is audible in a totally silent room (like when i'm sleeping).

Alright, good to hear it's not just mine then. I have the CPU whine too, both on DC and AC. It gets much louder when i'm scrolling. Luckily i'm not often in a silent room when i'm using it. It seems like the CPU whine is almost impossible to get away from, no matter which manufacturer you choose. I experienced it with 3 Dell notebooks as well, all Core2Duo's (both Merom and Penryn). A Sony AR I had with the original Core Duo was silent.

    Thanks for the replies..

I had some power adapter whine on my x60s and I called Lenovo for a replacement. If it bothers you and if you are in the warranty period, have it replaced. I found it rather annoying having to hear that noise.

On my unit, the power brick would make it's offending sounds once I plug it into the notebook and to a wall socket. My notebook would also mimic the sounds of the adapter.

When plugged into just the wall socket, the power brick was relatively silent.

I didn't have to send back the bad unit.
