Does anyone else out there regularly use an SXGA or UXGA ThinkPad for PowerPoint presentations?

In general, it's a breeze to change the display schemes using Fn-F7, however I have been encountering difficulties when returning to "My Normal Display Settings." Here are the problems:

    1. Whenever I switch to XGA output, of course my own monitor shrinks down to emulate that resolution. And any icon that is outside that smaller desktop is moved inside. When I switch, the icons do not return to their original places but are scattered around.

    2. If I select a desktop wallpaper, it disappears when I return to normal settings -- it reverts to the blue stock ThinkPad backdrop (the one with the time zones).

    3. Once (thankfully only once) when I returned to my normal desktop the icons for all my files, folders and shortcuts on the desktop were blank file images, then they disappeared entirely, leaving only the text underneath. I had to restart to bring them back.

Are these normal issues or do I have some kind of flaw in my system? Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't do it that often, but when I have (on my T43) yes, not all the icons go back to where they were. My wallpaper works properly and I have never had icons disappear though.

I personally don't have this problem as I'm using a fresh Windows install and thus don't have any Thinkpad wallpapers (or any wallpaper for that matter) and only have 1 icon on my desktop.

I however can't imagine why your wallpaper gets changed. You should be able to manage the Presentation Director schemes to ensure that you can choose your wallpaper when you change schemes. With regard to losing your icon arrangement on your desktop, you can find one of those programs which saves and restores your desktop icon layout for various screen resolutions.

    cheers!

Thanks, everyone. Ramian, I was able to download Icon Restore (freeware --nice) to fix the icon issue.

However, I still have the wallpaper problem. It stays when I go to presentation mode, then switches back when I return to Normal settings. Weird.

If you click on Manage Schemes when you hit Fn+F7, select a presentation scheme and edit it, you can specify the desktop background you want for each of the presentation schemes in the "Additional" tab.

Again, I've no idea why you're having this problem. All I'm trying to offer is a work-around for you. You could also try completely uninstalling Presentation Director, cleaning up stuff with a registry cleaner (RegSeeker for example), and re-installing Presentation Director.

    Good luck!
