I just noticed this morning that the price of the X201 (on the Australia website) went up by about $150 (from $1899 to $2049) but clicking through the shopping part, I realised why. They'd taken off the Home version of Windows 7, so now you can only get Professional (or Ultimate), and the size of the HDD has changed so the lowest you can get is 320GB plus the lowest battery you can get is the 6 Cell.
The good thing is that they still have a coupon going that gives 20% off, but it ends next Monday. I called up Lenovo and the person said that I should expect some weekend coupons, however she didn't know how much. What has been peoples experience with these coupons? Should I go ahead and buy the X201 now with the 20% coupon, or wait around and see if something better comes out? Then again I don't want to find out that the X201 has been discontinued because of the X220...
I found this guy on eBay who sells them for a very reasonable price, however I'd have to pay the customs tax in Australia and I don't know what to do![]()

Your guess is as good as mine. They keep it kind of random. Otherwise people would just wait for the sales.
-
Just buy it and don't check back if they change the price. The problem with buying technology, you can play the wait game, but by the time the price become cheaper there will be a refreshed version.
-
It's a tough call :/ I'm leaning towards just buying it through Lenovo but I'm gonna call up Customs and find out exactly how much I'll be charged if I buy through eBay.
-
Aussie X201 is US$1000 more than the USA one?? How much is a plane ticket from Aus to USA?
Or you could take a plane to NZ. NZ X201 is NZ$1.8k... -
^^I know, it's crazy. But I wouldn't fly to the US and purchase it since I'd have to pay a customs tax when I get back to Australia. Same for NZ.
My only hope is the Lenovo website, or this guy on eBay, but I'll still have to pay a tax. -
Call customs and see how big the tax is
It might be that in the end youll save hundreds of dollars by ordering from USA ebay seller or some other US online retailer
Dont order from Lenovo until youve made sure what the local customs taxes are! -
^^I called them today, and went onto their website and according to my calculations, I should incur a customs tax of ~$216.32AUD, where the notebook price is $1301.47AUD, along with the postage of $102.95.
This would still make it some ~$100 cheaper than the Lenovo website with the 20% coupon, but I'll have to confirm everything these coming days. -

What specs are you after? There are x201 laptops on eBay that are sub $1000 inc. postage.
-
Yeah, what are the specs youre looking for?!
It sounds like your opting for beefed Core i7 laptop with 500Gb HDD and 4Gb of ram?
-
^^I wish
But my specs are:
Core i5 540/560 M
2GB RAM
320GB HDD
7 Home 64bit, and the rest of the standard stuff.
This guy that I found on eBay, he sells them for a reasonable price for even better specs than what I'm after so I *may* end up going with him. -
Perhaps post a link so we could see and judge the price, perhaps someone will be able to consult you with better ebay deals?
-
^^I don't wanna post a link encase someone decides to buy the one I want
the guy has some really good deals, at least for someone in Australia as myself, where the Lenovo website is over priced (and retail stores even more so).
But the official specs (from eBay, the others I posted are what I'd get off Lenovo.com) are:
Lenovo ThinkPad X201 2.66Ghz Core Intel i5-560M
Windows 7 Pro 64bit
4GB RAM
500GB 7200RPM HDD
BlueTooth, Mobile Intel QM57 Express Chipset
FingerPrint, Touch Pad, Track Point
6200N WiFi card
6-Cell Battery
5-in-1 multicard reader
1 year warranty
All for $1299USD -
Not sure if you should pay for 500Gb and 4Gb ram $1299.

^^Oh wow some of them are cheaper, plus one is under $1000 which means I can avoid the Customs Tax here. Thanks dude
But I just saw on Lenovo's website that they're offering a 30% discount for Australia...mm now i don't know what to do :/ I'd rather buy from Lenovo but eBay is still a little bit cheaper.
OK I just placed an order through the Lenovo website, with a 35% coupon, at $1300, similar to the specs I listed above. I just want to get this over an done with! At least this way it's secure, plus I would have had to wait a week to transfer money from my bank account then to pay pal then deal with eBay..it's done.
I'll let you guys know when it arrives! -
Congrats on your purchase. Just to add this important point in case someone else looks through this thread in the future: the warranty on a US machine wouldn't have transferred if you had gone that route.
-
^^Thanks. I ended up just getting the standard 1 year warranty.
-
If the machine had IWS warranty eligible for Australia then there would be no problems with warranty
Congrats on your purchase, dont forget to post impressions and some laptop pictures!
-
^^Thanks
I'll definitely post up a little review along with photos once I get it!
Price of X201 goes up, buy now or never?
