To any musicians out there:
I am a music teacher and am wanting to build a portable DAW that can handle these two tasks:
- Play a single VSTi in real time without hiccups (w/ asio drivers, of course)
- recording 8 tracks at a time w/ a MOTU 828 (24bit/44.1k)
I currently have a machine that can manage, based on an Athlon 64 2ghz chip, but its really big and i'm getting tired of lugging it around (about 10 lbs w/ adapter!). I've been looking at the thinkpads, and would LOVE a t60, but if I can get by w/ a T43 w/ a P M 760 for a few hundred $ less, I may do that.
SO, my question is whether or not the Pentium M's handle digital audio well. I've read some 'neck and neck' reviews btn the 760 and Turion processors (both single core), but they seem rather inconclusive.
Thanks for any response.

it's hard to say.... but i would venture to guess that you'd be ok. honestly, with stuff like this, you should try it out yourself. but if the althon is doing it, then i think the PM should be ok as well.
more important than the processor is the RAM. you NEED to max it out at 3gb if you're going to record 8 tracks and running vst's. 2ghz is still pretty good - depending on the DAW (ableton, cubase, protools?) and how efficient your install is.
go ahead and do it. i can't say for sure it'll work hickup-free, but if I were in your position I would at least try with the maxed-out RAM. worst comes to worst, you can up the latency on the ASIO card
Pro Audio DAW on a T43?
