I have a thinkpad t61 and on the right side, right by the thinkpad label, the top part of the shell seems to be very slightly loose. I can move it slightly up and down. Is this normal?

    Thanks.

I'm sure it is. How very slightly loose is it? More then a millimeter?

No, I wouldnt say more than a millimeter, but enough to see and notice. I guess I am just being picky. The other side is solid, but I am guessing that is because that is where all the ports are.

there's a screw in the bottom that can be tightened and it should be rigid.

My left side is more wobbly than my right...

    Anyways, your lid is fine.

Mine is the other way around but a lot of it the "issues" are caused by reading too much on this board. Dont think too much. You will drive yourself crazy. They wont take the machine back with out taking 15%. If you send it in for repair it could be mishandled and come back worse.

is it a slight lift that everyone is experiencing? Mine isnt bad, and I shouldnt be complaining. I should take your advice and not think about it so much. Im naturally picky and neurotic.

Which thinkpad label? There's 2. Do you mean the lid is loose when the its shut? If you mean that then yeah there's a bit of play on the right where the hinge is for mine. Otherwise I dont see anything loose elsewhere.

    Yeah,

I am talking about the area where the lid release is (but when it's open). On the top of the shell under the thinkpad logo (the one under the keyboard.)

It's a very slight lift, nothing to be worried about. Doesn't bother me one bit.

There is a slight lift on both sides but very very slight. The latch mechanism is on the right and IMO therefore makes the right side "tighter" than the left.
Other problems you might have is a slight buldge to the left of the power button and a sligtly looser palm rest to the left (where the edges of the casing meet). Also the lid is arced if you look from the back but that is by design.

My left side is tighter. My right side is the one that slightly lifts. Anyways, thanks all for your quick responses. I appreciate it!
