My daughter has a new T61 and I "finally" decided I needed to create the rescue media. However, after selecting:

    1. "Create Rescue Media" program
    2. I select the CD/DVD rescue media
    3. I get a pop-up "Create Rescue Media" with a BIG RED X is not installed (options to retry or cancel).
    4. Cancel brings up another pop-up to Select Recordable Drive, but the dropdown has no options.

Any ideas? Does the rescue media have to be created before the system is customized... she's long past that point.

I have a similar problem creating the Product Recovery discs.

    Thanks for any comments.

In mine there was a bug in the stock install that created a set of discs but the first disc was bad and the burning of the last disc failed

It was solved by using system update to get everything updated.

    Also

check lenovo.com/support to see if you have one of the drives that has a firmware update.

make sure your blank dvd/cd is free of scratches

and make sure your dvd drive is inserted into the ultrabay correctly. Just eject it and slap it back in to be sure

At least one problem solved... after using the Thinkpad System Update to update several programs, including some Vista 64 programs and the newest version of Rescue and Recovery, I was able to create the recovery discs.

I agree with the comment above.
You need to make sure the Lenovo software is updated.
Click on ThinkVantage button and Update My System and follow directions.
    Then try it.
    I just used mine.
    I upgraded from a 100gb 7200 to a 250gb 5400 and used Backup & Rescue w/o a hitch.
