After reading about a new touchpad driver that enables multitouch on engadget i checked to see if Lenovo had released a new version of the UltraNav driver, and they did. It supposedly supports all the multitouch features the generic synaptics driver supports.

BUT no matter whether i install the generic Synaptics drivers or the UltraNav drivers, i never get the multitouch options in the preferences.
Since this driver enables multitouch even on very old touchpads, i don't think it's a hardware problem. What am i doing wrong?

download this driver from the link and not from the Lenovo website.

It worked for me on my T61. I would recommend uninstalling the old one, reinstalling the new then restarting.

I can't get this to work on my T400 either. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers (from the lenovo site) but that didn't change anything.

What exactly did you do, Peteman100?

I actually just downloaded the ones linked on Engadget and installed over my old driver. It worked immediately.

Thanks Peteman. I tried it out, but these drivers aren't quite as good for the TrackPoint as the Lenovo ones. Since I use the TrackPoint far more than the trackpad, I switched back.

I hope that Lenovo will update their drivers to enable multitouch on all the machines (even though the changelog says it already has).

I also primarily use the Trackpoint, but it would still be nice to have multitouch.

When you said that the drivers aren't quite as good for the Trackpoint as the Lenovo ones, what do you mean?

    Thanks!

The trackpoint seems a bit quicker and snappy. Also the middle button no longer works ( as far as I know) so if you want to use track point and scroll your going to have to do a left click on the up/down bar.

    UPDATE:
I've switched back to the IBM drivers. I found scrolling jerky and quick compared to the very smooth scrolling of the manufacters drivers.

I also updated the ThinkPad UltraNav Driver to the latest 14.0.18.0 version and no luck with the multi-touch touchpad. In the release notes it is saying that starting at version 14.0.16.0 we should get 2 and 3 finger gesture support. Any idea what to do next?

I just meant that the movement of the cursor doesn't feel quite as smooth, and the scrolling isn't quite as controlled as it is with the lenovo drivers.

It's a very subjective evaluation. The best way to see if it bothers you would be to just install the drivers. At most, you'll have to restart your computer a handful of times if you don't end up liking them.

I think you used the wrong drivers, it the HP drivers people are using for multi touch, not the lenovo drivers, but if updated lenovo drivers are coming that awesome

The drivers were offered through Lenovo's TVSU so it's difficult to install the wrong ones. Here's the readme file - look around the middle of file where the version history is.
