I had seen character duplication on my ThinkPad in Microsoft Word only on the following situation - and yes, I know it is extremely strange :)

I have to be on battery power, and in Word my cursor has to be over the styles in the ribbon-bar (or maybe the ribbon bar itself). I do not have to click anything, it is enough that the cursor is on top of the styles. When I type, I get characters 2/3/4 times, sometimes, not always.

I simply move the cursor over to the page area, and it stops doing it :)

Have seen on a Lenovo U350 as well, not just ThinkPads :)

Do you think its software or hardware? It doesnt happen all the time, im wondering whether re-installing windows would solve it because its SO annoying!

It is really hard to say. In my case I know its software, because it does not happen in every application. In fact I have only seen it in Word.

You said it happens in Word and OWA, so could it be that you are also experiencing it with only two applications? Have you ever seen it in other webpages/browsers, notepad, wordpad, etc? If it only happens in certain applications it is probably a software issue. If it happens everywhere, it could be a hardware issue.

well if you have the time, then it is worth trying the reinstallation method to rule out the software related keyboard problem.

In the windows control panel keyboard applet there is a normally a slider for the repeat delay.. could it be related to that?
