I just got my T430 in the mail, and I installed some seperately bought ram and an msata ssd ( Newegg.ca - Mushkin Enhanced Atlas Series MKNSSDAT120GB-DX mSATA 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) ). I created recovery disks, but when I try to use them to install windows to the ssd, I can't, since the drop-down to select the drive to install to is dimmed and set to the internal HDD.

The ssd seems to appear in the bios (in the boot order configuration screen), and in windows (in disk administration it's an unformatted 'basic disk')

    help?

I would try a couple things:
    1. Remove all other bootable devices with the exception of the CD/DVD drive and try the Lenovo Rescue and Recovery disk set
    2. Test Windows installation from a Windows DVD (not the Lenovo R&R disk set)

I just finished installing a clean copy of windows and it worked. Now I have to go through the trouble of installing drivers and whatnot.

    oh well

Well, at least option 2 worked. And look at it this way, no bloat. :D

What I did was on my t430s:
1- create a rescue an recovery disk
2- physically remove the original drive
    3- add the msata drive.
4- boot to bios and change the order of boot disk so that the msata comes before the other drive.
5- boot the cds (4 of them) created in [1]
6- once everything is set, then put back the drive removed in [2]
7- remap the old drive [2] partitions to E:, F:
