I have had problems when using MSN Messenger for video chat.

The audio/video setup of MSN messenger works just fine. Chatting with audio only works fine. However, when the video chat connection is established and the video stream pops up, I can't hear the other person's voice. Actually, the computer's audio output stops working. I cannot hear anything from the computer when the video chat is on. As soon as I stop the video chat, the audio output comes back to work.

During the video chat, my voice can be heard on the other side, so the microphone/audio input is still working. I also tried an external webcam but the problem still exists. I re-installed the audio driver (Conexant Universal Device Install/Uninstall x86 Application downloaded from Lenovo's website) but it doesnt help.

My t400 comes with P8400, 2GB ram, intel 5100 wireless card, DVD+-RW, embedded webcam, embedded microphone, no bluetooth or card reader, integrated intel video card and integrated audio card. I downgraded the OS to XP Pro SP3 (the MSN messenger video chat used to work well with Vista Home).

    Any suggestion??? Thanks a lot!!!

    If I understand you correctly:

    - audio only is ok
    - video on kills audio with internal webcam
    - video on kills audio with external webcam

this tells me it is either
    a) a bandwith issue, in which case a faster connection or less load would solve the problem. are you at an internet cafe with no password and/or many other people around?

    b) it is a messenger issue. I use skype and have no problems EXCEPT when there is a bandwith issue

    c) the messenger servers are overloaded or something. skype does this sometimes, too, dropping calls, etc.

I would not fiddle with the drivers anymore IF the camera is working well otherwise, which can be tested using windows explorer

    Thanks for the reply.

I am using Comcast's cable internet so I guess the bandwidth should be a problem.

    I'll try another messenger though.

I have a similar issue but it's not bandwidth related. My audio output mutes whenever I receive a skype video call. But when I initiate it, the audio is fine.

I found out the problem is due to the fact that under Volume Control -> Mic In Volume, it is set to Mute by default. I could get the system to work when I unmute it. however, there is a severe problem of feedback; until I got to Volume Control -> Options -> Properties (with advanced selected) -> Mixer Device -> Conexant HD Audio Input -> Show the following volume controls : -> Advanced (on volume control) -> Other Controls -> uncheck Microphone Boost.

Bayernjuven : did you install the microsoft UAA audio driver before the conexant driver?
