I've been a reader/lurker for about a week now and I've gathered that most on this board are more computer literate. I just want to know what proprietary programs can I consider deleting i.e. Thinkvantage _____. Are these running in the background? What else of the 75 processes now running can I consider stopping? I only use the computer (XP OS) for internet, office programs, etc. I connect to a VPN for work. Any suggestions? help?

You don't need many/any of the Thinkvantage tools. Pick and choose what you like to use and remove the rest. :)

A screenshot of the process list would help. If you google the process, you should get some idea of what it does and whether or not you need it. Also, you may consider changing your msconfig file for a faster boot.

I've found that the ThinkVantage suite doesn't actually use a lot of resources for modern ThinkPads. In fact, a lot of them are quite useful.

The only ones I suggest you keeping are: Power Manager and Active Protection System.

Please have a look at the clean install guide link in my sig. It is for Vista, but if you read the F.A.Q. section at the bottom of the guide you will fing a lot of useful information. Especially read the F.A.Q.: "What is ThinkVantage?"
