    Hello

i am a proud new owner of a T40. I had planned on buying a refurb from an ebay vendor that is fairly local to me as they had great prices for what i needed it for but i came across an awesome deal on a used unit from a private owner who simply needed the cash.

He had recently cleaned the hard drive and shipped with the unit all the recovery cds he had ordered from IBM.

I just finished installing everything and it seems like it's a bunch of junk.

I was actually thinking of simply saving some of the IBM access utilties, reformatting the hard drive and then just installing the version of XP home i have. I just recently installed it on my desktop and i think it would make things run smoother on my notebook.

What do you all of you think?

    Thanks
    Jim

PS Also, does anyone know where i might be able to get a new "shift" key? The right side shift key must have seen A LOT of use and it really doesn't work that great unless you hit it dead center.

Just the idea of buying a used laptop scares me. How much did you pay for this T40??

How do you know your new used T40 isn't stolen?

I've been using a "factory reconditioned" T40 from a reputable ebay store for almost 2.5 years and have been very happy. It's my personal opinion that you don't get the longevity with non-Thinkpads. They just last.

I paid an excellent price for what is configured on it.

I bought it from the original owner, he had th original receipt and all the recovery CDs he ordered from IBM himself.

Oh, and by the way the shift key was simply just not on correctly. I took it off and re-installed it correctly and all is well.

    Cool ibm...

Yours is ALMOST exactly what i was going to get @ $700 from a refurbished seller. However the extra options i got from the one i bought warranted the extra cash i thought
