Hey, so I just ran into the fan error for my Thinkpad T61 and I would prefer to fix it. Only deal is that I cannot find where I can purchase a fan, brand new from Lenovo and I'm not sure what sites are reputable. Do you guys have any suggestions where I can purchase a fan that should last hopefully another two years?

The FRU is 42W2462. Thanks in advanced!

You can call up Lenovo and buy the part from them. Should be around 100+ USD if i remember it correctly.

Now that it's around 100, would you say it's worth buying it new from Lenovo or could I possibly settle for an ebay one.

you could try cleaning the old fan, by taking the fan blade off to see whether that fixes the problem.

Most of the fan on ebay are second hand or refurbished. You can give them a shot if it cheap enough.

Yeah I took my computer apart last night and pulled the fan and heatsink off cleaned every speck of dust off. I didn't attemp to to take off the fan blade though. However it is running fairly quietly or not at all at the moment with moments of really loud blowing.

I ordered the part off Lenovo and it was around 35 or so for the part and 14 bucks next day shipping. Not too bad i guess. I'll tell you how it goes!

    Thanks.

Got the fan today and it's back to normal. When I booted it up, it didn't say fan error and it's not obnoxiously loud anymore. Still really disappointed in this thinkpad though.

Other than the fan, what are you disappointed about?

Fan failure does occur, but very irregularily, if you think a minor fan failure in Thinkpad is bad, then don't ever get a HP laptop.

Sometimes this is just a luck of a draw. You only spent like 50 dollars to fix, if it was other laptops, you wouldn't have done the repair yourself, since they would require you to strip the laptop down even further.

Well my laptop charger died a little after a year and so did my battery (doesn't hold any sort of charge)

    Thanks for all your help!

    1. A charger dying certainly doesn't desserve to be put into the OEM's hands, a wall adapter to me is too universal to justify the reason into the hands of the brand of the laptop. They are called failures per 100, or 1000, or 1000000 units manufactured, and you probably were just one of the few unlucky ones who received failures of the bunch.

    2. Your unit most likely shipped with one of the many batteries that were recalled in the T6x series due to defects, you could install the battery replacement eligibility program that should analyze the battery status to see if you qualify for a free battery replacement. If you are all for a new battery free of charge, run the program and see if you are eligible, which to me you most likely are. I use a now 3-year old T43 and can still squeeze about 3 hours out of it (6 cell), it has a dedicated ATI X300 GPU too which is even more impressive.
