Has anyone actually tried that? If so - which IPS model did you get and where to buy?

Although I may be mistaken, I think that the IPS screens previously available were only in the 4:3 screen formats, so they would not fit in the T400/T500.

Seems to be that way. I checked some panel manufacturers (IDTech, CMO, LG, Samsung, AUO...) - nothing. :(

If those RGB LED screens from Dell would fit? A bit pricey but still a lot better than the WSXGA+ screen I've seen in a T500.

I read somewhere that M4400 screen does not work becuase it uses completely incompatible inverter/cable that doesnt fit. The only successful retrofit I read about was somebody fitting a glossy LG panel into a T61p. And IPS laptop screens are currently extinct in anythnig over 12".

I think you got a better shot going the other way - a system board from a T400 into a 15" T60 case with IPS screen. You can't use the T500 as it's too wide. Someone over on ThinkPads.com put a 14" Santa Rosa T61 widescreen board into a T60 with IPS screen. The farther you get away from the T60 the less likely is going to work as the little changes they make in the design add up to make it not fit.

If you need a good display, I recommend you look at the tablets. They don't use TN-panels.

I am not sure 14" and wide screen IPS panels have ever existed.
The next problem, i am practically sure, is panel connecteres are not compatible.

So, it is not worth your efforts especially if your are not technical laptop guru.

the T400 planar won't fit in a 15.0" T60 chassis.   footprint, bolt pattern, and socket locations are all significantly different enough to keep this from working.   if it did, i'd have built one by now. ;)

I know for certain you're not going stick a 4:3 screen onto a 16:10 case. If there was a shot at doing it, a T400 board seems more likely. As I said over time the changes add up to make it a no-go, though I suppose with enough skill anything's possible.
