Anyone know if the T400's processor can be removed or is it soldered to the motherboard? If it can be removed I would like to upgrade to quad core when newegg gets some in stock.

You might burn your mobo if you do that.

You can change CPUs, but do not put in a quad core. The cooling system isn't near close enough to handle the extra heat. Only 17" laptops really have what it takes.

If Intel releases a 35W quad core processor in the future?

I still wouldn't recommend it. The BIOS is unlikely to support it, and cooling/power consumption would probably be a nightmare.

Who knows. You probably just have to wait it out like the rest of us.

they will have a 25w tdp quad core in the future....but then again, it all depends on how long u mean for the future :)

i would say a 99% chance that a quad core cpu that fits in the t400 will not be made with a 35w tdp or lower....when that time comes, it will be a much newer chipset, different socket perhaps, etc

The QCs are not supposed to work in the standard C2D motherboards, mainly because the QCs have a different electrical pin-out, and may require a different socket P '.
TDP really doesn't make a huge difference, if you can undervolt the cpu, and downclock it when on battery.

And the mobile QCs have two dies smacked onto a single chip, and will need a heatsink with a larger surface area to cover both the dies. So, if the T400 doesn't release a QC version of the T400, you'll never find a larger heatsink to cover the QC....

They have quad-core in 15.4" (Dell, HP, Lenovo), but I think those must've been mod with some specialized cooling and power supplies.

The T400 has a small heatsink used to cool the CPU and the GPU. Quad-core would be too hot for the current heatsink.
