The G580 supports cpu's with maximum 35 watt TDP, the i7 quads are at 45. How much does this difference affect it? I recall running a 44 watt cpu in my old laptop which (Intel 965) only supported 28 watt TPD. And it posed no issues whatsoever. But i hear newer computers are a bit more picky about what they can keep under control.

I'm considering the i7-3610QM, figured if I invest 200 usd in a new cpu, I might as well invest 220 and get a quad instead. Or is this overkill?

It will mostly be used for programming and graphics design. But I'm not above gaming on it so the Intel HD4000 is a must. Currently the i3-3110m cpu bottlenecks it pretty bad.

    Other specs are:
    8GB DDR3 (soon 16)
    Intel 330 180GB + Seagate 500GB
    Intel HD4000

run the current CPU under wprime for around an hour and check your peak temps. If they're under ~70, you should be able to run the 3610qm at around 85-90 in full load. If your CPU gets hotter than that I don't know if I'd recommend it.

Temps seem to be fine. Maxed out on 73 celsius after one hour, 35 min. Now if you use some proper thermal paste it would go even lower.

Lets just hope bios supports a quad....

EDIT: It seems a i7-3520M works fine according to a post on lenovo community...'

    EDIT2: According to this: http://shop.lenovo.com/ca/en/products/tech-specs/laptops/Essential/G-Series/G580/

The i7-3612QM seems to work. So that's what I'm buying. Better stay on the safe side. I'll check back once I've installed it.
