I am currently leaning towards getting a T400 but I am wondering how are the speakers/sound quality of T400, lenovo in general.

Like BinkNR said, the speakers/sound quality of the ThinkPad line is just not really designed for multimedia purposes.

I was over at microcenter the other day looking at the lenovos. The X300's speakers beat that of the U110, despite the fact that U110 has dobly digital.

The speakers of Lenovo continues to daze me.

You should never depend on laptop speakers to be of any substantial quality, especially a thinkpad. And Dobly, THX...any brand etc...doesn't mean anything it is just marketing :). Carry headphones. I personally like Etymotic ER-4p on the go.

I wouldn't expect anything from notebook speaker, would you?
Even the Altec Lansing speakers on HP notebook sound CRAP, err... slightly better than others.
thinkpads are very well built in general

Harman/Kardon found in the Toshibas are the best of laptop speakers, some of then are even better than a 2.1 or 3.1 speaker system.
But well, for thinkpad, it's a different story.
My R50 sounds much better than the R61.

My T43's speakers are 'crap' because I just can't hear them. They're simply not loud enough. Not sure if this has to do with placement. (underside of the front of the notebook)

I'm assuming the T6x series has already improved upon the T4x series, and the T400/500 would have improved even further. From the T500's picture ( http://www.notebookreview.com/assets/36014.jpg), the speakers are located above the keyboard which should be better than what I have.

Similarly, my T61p speakers aren't great either. They are not very loud. By comparison, if I use headphones, then at the same setting, the sound is too loud!
