Why is the X301 so much more expensive than the X200? I know the screen on the 301 is better... but THAT much better? ... the SSD? the x200 comes with a 7200 rpm hard drive with more capacity... the difference in speed between those hds cant be that notorious...

With regards to the SSD, yes.. it can make all the difference if it is a good one. SSD's are still very expensive, personally i don't think it's worth the price. On a further note, an SSD doesn't carry in just speed beneffits, with an SSD you can now theoretically jog with your computer without worrying about drive failure or damage, or performance hits.

    hi calot.

the x300 series is more expensive compared to the x200 because.

-slimness! thats the main reason. it also have new features.

-new roll-cage design - all magnesium
    -better screen. higher res.
-carbon fibre lid with fibreglass side hybrid construction.
-Special Small package cpu and motherboard.
-ultrabay with option for ultra-ultra-slim dvd multi drive.
    -extra trackpad.

there is. much much much difference. its even faster than desktop 10k rpm drive (wd raptor) also it is extremely durable. you can throw your notebook down a 10 story building, the notebook will be crushed, but at least your ssd would not be.

I think X300 is expensive because it is designed for the same market as the Macbook Air, and people in that market are used to paying big bucks for a thin laptop with a (relatively) big screen.

In fact, I claim that many people in that market would refuse to buy a laptop that is inexpensive. Expensive thin laptop = status symbol.

You can get x30x thinkpads for a pretty decent price anyways with sales now. It is suppose to be a premium product. Thinner with more attention to detail in the build.

You pay for the thinness and exclusivity of the X30x series. The optical drive on these machines are expensive, so all are the components on them like whats have mentioned. It is not cheap to be on the forefront of technological miniaturization. Do you see much marketing for the X200 compared to the X30x series?? The cost for marketing does come out of your pocket, through the higher price you pay for the x301.

You have to pay for all that glamorous image of owning an exclusive model.

I think the SSD is worth the money if you can afford it. I have a 80gb Intel in my current rig. I'm extremely impatient person and the difference in the speed with which the programs open is astounding. I can get MS word to open nearly instantaneously.
