If you got a model preconfigured with DVD-Recordable, will you please tell me what optical drive you got??

According to the tabook, I should have a SuperMultiBurner 40Y8623 dual layer with my preconfigured X60 model 1709-97U

But in fact, I got the crappy matshita DVD-RAM UJ-822S... which is the old POS that's only got 2X dvd write speed, notorious for its burn errors, and can't write DL.
(With the laptop connected to the base, goto Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> DVD/CD-ROM)

My system is not returnable... those bait 'n switch bastards!

I removed the optical drive from the base to look... and yep it's the crappy part #39T2507 dated April '05, it's *not* 40Y8623

    How about yours???

Thanks in advance to anyone for checking theirs!

822, yuk. Perhaps you should ask them why you have the 822 when you are supposed to have the other.

Well that sucks, even if it's not returnable you might get somewhere by calling and complaining, witness the customer support of this Z61t review:

    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3118

where he was misinformed on the DVI capabilities and won some kick backs from Lenovo.

After numerous calls, they offered me a (prepaid) return with full refund.

But I probably wont return it because of the low sale price. And i like the machine.

Why would you return the whole computer when the dvd drive is removeable? Can't you just get them to exchange that?

No, lenovo refused to exchange the matshita 2.4X single layer optical drive for the 40y8623 8x optical dual-layer burner specified in the TA book.
According to lenovo, the part number of my drive is in the "package lib", meaning it's a shippable part for my laptop. It's a multiburner, and that's all they promised, so they say.

So after lots of whining, the manager said i could return the whole laptop for full refund. Wont exchange the optical tho.

You could try calling again and talking to another manager. Sure they'll make notes on your serial number or esc+ account, but sooner or later they'll get sick of you

I'm more passive aggressive... i could just order a T60 that has a 40y8623, then swap the opticals, and send it back... tell them what they told me, "hey it's a multiburner so what's your beef?"

oh i ascertained with other owners that i am not the only one who got short-changed with a slower optical on the x-series. And some other owners got the better optical.

But i got the samsung lcd, nmb keyboard, and sony battery.

Well, you got lucky half the time anyway. It's too bad about the burner and the battery.

Although I wonder if the Sony battery would have this high pitched humming sound that my Sanyo has. If not, maybe it would be worth the fire risk...

i have no humming pitch with my sony battery... a bios update might fix it for you... I've read that the bios changes for the X60 fixed the humming but worsened the battery life. Apparently the newest bios (i've not tried it yet) helps battery & heat but reinstates the humming. LOL
Maybe it should be a configurable option: choose no humming or longer batter life. LOL

i should try looking into whether it was only one specific sony battery model that burns? hopely not the X-series 8-cell.

I guess i should send this back... just when i got it almost all set up finally.

You know, I'd consider trying to switch to a Sony, but, well... I use the thing in my lap, and I've read that the batteries tend to explode down and forward.

Uhmm... ouch. If I wanted a vasectomy I'd pay for one, thank you.

Reading thinkwiki, it sounds like the humming has something to do with processor C state. When the processor is loaded, not necessarily full, the battery stops humming. I also noticed when I had the keyboard off and booted with battery power that the sound is present even when the fan isn't spinning, so it's definitely no that either.

I looked into a BIOS update the other day, but I keep forgetting to check my current version when I boot. I didn't see anything about the humming in changelogs.

no the bios program changelogs dont mention any relationship between humming and bios version, i read it on another forum.

i just upgraded bios to 1.11 (you must manually d/l and upgrade; the think vantage update wont do that upgrade). This supposedly improves power mgmt which ppl have been complaining about, but seems to me this upgrade is no more than a placebo

I guess I'll give it a try, then. At least I won't have to jump through the free dos hoops, they have a bootable CD image.
