I never thought I'd be ordering my laptop from an outlet, but looks like I just might.
I am concerned about the lack of detailed specs on some of the models, but I guess you have to assume that if the unit has Windows 7 on it, it really must have been built in the past few months, correct? i.e., it wasn't built a year ago and then later reconfig'd with w7?

which laptop are you talking about? usually many of the machines in outlet can be sitting there for couple of months. Regarding OS installation, they would usually have broken security seal if it was done after it was shipped from factory. Also, the sticker on the bottom of the laptop should have the year and month when the laptop is manufactured, so this is the most concrete evidence of the manufacturing date.
However, from what i remember reading the Lenovo policy on outlet laptops is that the warranty can't be extended to what it was shipped with, so please bear that in mind. -
Look out for the "Manufacturing part number" line in the specs - with that, you can use the tab book and find as much detail as you want.
I found that it's in the format XXXXXXXYYYYYYY where
XXXXXXX = Part Number
YYYYYYY = Serial Number
