I've got a new Thinkpad R61 (T8100, 2GB RAM, 14.1") on the way and am wondering about how extensive I'll need to guard against bloatware... My main concern is the Norton/Symantec crap, which has vexed previous PCs until I've whacked it and used other AV programs.

Which brings me to my questions:

Is Norton preinstalled and running on the first bootup---or is it simply waiting to be installed and allow you the choice of installing or deleting it?

Have any of you been successful in uninstalling it. Norton used to have a nasty habit of never quite uninstalling all of itself.

If it matters, the TP will come with WinXP-pro as it's OS.

    TIA, ~john

Yeah you're going to have to make some selections then the thing will install, so you can just cancel out of all that when it boots and then just install whatever is left.

Once you get your R61, this is what you do.

Once you hit that power button, and it asks you to press the Blue Button to perform a recovery. Do so.

Follow the steps to perform a custom factory restore, which will allow you to check and uncheck what bloatwares you want installed in the first place, including Nortonware.

I've been reading about the custom factory restore process (I'm coming from years in the Dell Universe which doesn't do this)... Is this something that works anytime, not just right-out-of-the-box? Reason I'm asking is that the R61 should arrive a couple of days before I need to take a trip and I may just want to play with it then, deferring the serious cleanup until I get back.

    TIA, ~john

That is correct, you can perform it anytime as long as you have ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery utility installed as well as having the hidden recovery partition.

    I wouldn't quite say 'clean' - clean-ish, perhaps.

Do the boot up then create the recovery media first as suggested by others. However, my preference is to plug in an external USB HDD and create the recovery media there instead of using CD/DVD. (long story....)

Anyway, after you do that, the most down to the core - cut out everything but the bloatware guide is here
