    I have a t520 with a dedicated GPU.
Im 100 percent sure that the Intel HD 3000 is capable of decoding a *.mkv video on its own without enabling the power hungry NVidia. But when i start playing the movie, Optimus turns on the dedicated gpu.

Is there any way to control that, or am i stuck with default controls?

Right click the desktop and click NVIDIA Control Panel. Then click "Manage 3D Settings" on the left, then the "Program Settings" tab on the right half of the screen. Click "Add" to add your video program to the list, then set it to Integrated graphics. See the attached picture.

Yes, right click the media player icon, choose "Run with graphics processor", and change the defaults to Intel 3000.
