I just received my T420 and I absolutely love the display. I dont know what everyone else is saying about this griddiness or graininess but I love it. Its very clear/clean and the antiglare is very easy on your eyes.

I am usually very picky about displays and to me this is more than acceptable (I upgraded to the 1600 x 900) model.

Anyone who is on the fence about getting the T420 due to the bad comments on the screen, just order one but make sure to get the display upgrade!

Anyways, I have a question regarding on how to see what type of lcd display model that you have. How do I check to see what lcd model you have?

From John Ratsey's thread, he has been using HWiNFO32 to get the LCD model :)

Just installed it and it seems that my display is an LP140WD2-TLB1. Dont know what model that is but it looks excellent. :D

Edit: after googling it seems that its an LG display! :D

The LG displays are getting good feedbacks. Hope that I am getting that display too :)

I hope you get an LG panel as well! If you do, you will be very happy with it.

I'm also so glad that there are no dead/stuck pixels (checked with dpt in the dark extensively) I'm very anal about that, lol.

Now my worries is 100% gone. :)

I don't notice any grids on my 1600x900 display but the viewing angles are pretty atrocious. Doesn't bother me for what I am using it for though.

Yeah, that's the display that's in my T420. It seems to work well enough for me with medium fonts.

Perhaps I'm not as picky as some because my T420 isn't my primary computer. I'm not sure how any 14" laptop will have a display equal to a decent 22" desktop monitor anyway.

Would be nice to see more youtube videos/reviews on the T420. Perhaps you can contribute?

And does it have a bit of a blue tint? It may not show if you are only looking at that display, but put another notebook alongside and you should see the difference.

I just purchased a T420s. I do have what you would term 'screen door effect'. All the Thinkpads I have owned have that almost grubby tint to the screen. I use my Thinkpad laptop pretty much for all business. The 420s screen is nice and bright and the fonts and graphics are crisp a very readable. Yes I would agree the viewing angle is pretty tight, however, other than the fact my eyes are not what they used to be I am pretty pleased overall with the screen.

I carry around a Macbook Air 11 inch for my quick/media laptop and while that screen is glossy bright, I would say the crispness and visability of the Thinkpad is just as good and at a better resolution. In fact I prefer the slightly subdued matte screen for the kind of work that I do - excel and word primarily.

I would love to do one but sadly I do not have a camcorder. I do have my phone but the quality wouldnt be too great and I dont see the point of shooting the video with a such poor camera.

I know what you guys are talking about with this screen door effect. In my experience, if you look real close almost any laptop will show this effect.

I actually like that look because before with a non LED backlit display, those lines werent apparent. It gives me the impression that its so vivid that you can see such things.

Yeah, some matte displays have that sort of "gritty" effect. I've found AUO displays to be particularly prone to this. It's certainly not a new phenomenon.

My T420s's display is LTN140TK. I guess it is from Samsung. Image looks sharp and clear. While I still prefer the screen form factor of T400 (T420s screen size is 1/4" wider than T400 but 1/2" shorter), I think the display quality of T420s is better and I am happy with it.

    AU Optronics - B
    LG Philips - LP
    Samsung - LT or LTN

LTN140TK (14.0") is manufactured by Samsung.

I'm pretty sure the "SEC" prefix is reserved for Dell's, my T61 has a Samsung panel that begins with "LTN". I guess Windsor had diciphered the last missing panel as we pretty much know about the AUO and LG panels, whether the Samsung panel is the superior out of the three remains to be seen but from his experiences it does seem positive so far.

OK. I stand corrected but I'm sure that I've SEC prefix on Samsung notebooks as well as Dells.

Samsung being the third manufacturer is quite plausible.

This is my first post here. I just received my T420s today. No complaints here. I got the samsung screen. LTN140KT03401. Looks good to me, but I'm no expert at screen quality. It could have some improved vertical viewing angles.

I have the AU screen and it suffers from the 'gridiness' that others have mentioned in the forums. Color repo isn't the best either, however I'm not doing any photo or design work so that's fine.
