    Hey all,

This is probably a ridiculous question (at least for this forum, as it probably doesn't have anything to do with the type of laptop), but I was hoping for some help. I realized today that my hard drive is filling up surprisingly fast. I have a 70gb drive and have very few large programs/files on my drive, and yet it says I only have 18gb of free space available. I did all the drive maintenance (clean up, defragment etc...) and it only made a slight difference.

I've searched through my entire hard drive using a terrific freeware program called WinDirStat ( http://windirstat.info/) that gives you a percentage breakdown of where your hard drive space is being taken up. According to this program (and my manual searches through the hard drive) there appears to be about 32 gb of missing space! By missing, I mean it is unavailable (i.e., not free) and yet unaccounted for by any of the visible programs/files I have on the drive.

Anyone have any ideas as to what may be going on? Is it possible there is a hidden sub-partition on the drive? If so, how do I find that?

    Thanks

How would I confirm that? I'm pretty sure I have recovery discs, so is it possible to remove that partition?

You can always perform a clean install and delete. Otherwise, you can use partition managers like PartitionMagic.

    Try this......

at the bootup splash screen, press the blue thinkvantage button to get into the recovery partition system. Browse through all the options until you find the section on backups. Chances are the settings are set to store 2 complete backups of your hard drive.....so if you have an 80 gig drive with 20 gigs of info on it, and the recovery partition automatically makes 2 backups that would be a total of 3 at 20 gig each for 60 gig of hard drive space.

Keep wading around in there until you find where to delete those backups and watch all the free space magically re-appear.
