I configured my T61 with the "DVD Recordable 8x Max Dual Layer, Ultrabay Slim" option. I was wondering if anyone knows whether it takes DVD+R or DVD-R or both. Thanks.

It will also do DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL (DL=Dual/Double Layer).

Does anyone else's DVD drive run loud like mine?

Its seriously annoying hearing the drive start up every 10 seconds while I'm watching a DVD. Hope theres a way to remedy it.

Well, the DVD drive is constantly reading the disc, so that it can buffer and play the movie/show that you're watching. So either add some sound padding, or just deal with it.

It's quite normal. Though, if it sounds really loud (random whirring thats louder than a nice low whir up that you hear when putting in a disc) then you might want to check it out. Try another laptop or desktop, if the sound is louder than that, then you know something might be up.

A good program like anydvd has a feature called "speed control". It will slow the drive down while viewing DVDs. The DVD doesn't need to spin that fast just to view a DVD.
