I'm interested in getting a Thinkpad, but I also need to use my 1920x1200 DVI display. I guess that means I also need to get a docking station.

My question is, since no Thinkpads have DVI out, where is the DVI out from the docking station sourced from? Will high-res displays be a problem?

Is it converted from VGA to DVI? I'm wondering because I know the quality would suffer. I can definitely tell the difference when I use VGA on my display versus DVI.

I don't know what you mean by sourced from, but the video signal comes from the GPU at least for the Mini Dock. Most new ThinkPads should be able to output WUXGA. The Advanced Dock can take a low-profile pci-e graphics card. I have had my Dell monitor hooked up through both the DVI and the VGA outs. I can't tell the difference. GOod Luck.
