Is it just me or is the plastic material on the top/back of the monitor (not sure what to call this, just the back of the monitor when it's closed) horrible? I get fingerprints on it like crazy and it's impossible to clean off with a lint-free clothe, it usually just smudges it making it look even worse.

Not sure if IBM always used this material, but I really hope Lenovo steers away from it in newer models. It's just a pet-peeve of mine to see my really expensive toys looking dirty. :p

If anyone knows a solution on how to clean the back of the monitor plastic part, I would be greatly appreciative if you wouldn't mind sharing.

    Thanks,
    Brent

Yeah it has some sort of coating on it. Mine kind of looks dirty too. I guess I just don't care as much. :p

The non-slip rubberized coating applied to the outside of the LCD lid has been a staple of the T-series and other ThinkPads for quite some time now. It is most definitely not a T61-specific feature.

That said, I clean said non-slip coating on my T60 with a damp rag sporting a mild soapy water solution and wipe the coating dry with a microfiber towel.

All you need is warm water and dish washing soap to clean the top lid. It'll bring back that 'shimmer' and the blackness too. I was very surprised at the result from such an easy cleaning technique.

Hmmm...I'll have to give that a shot. Mine is pretty greasy looky on the left side because that is where I always grab it. :)

Yeah, my lid was like that too. After cleaning it with the above technique, it was all gone. :)

I get some fingerprints from time to time, mainly from opening and closing the lid of my T61. I also use a microfiber cloth to wipe the surface of the cover. Most of the time, it works without any soap but if the smudges and other particles are too 'greasy', I'll make sure the microfiber wipe is soaked in some soapy water prior to wiping.

By the way, what is that metalic like 'shimmer' on the surface? Is that part of the coating or is it the material underneath it?

It's not really fingerprints but rather a couple inches in from the left or right edge is like a strip of faded black. I think it's build up from grabbing those areas so much. I don't get it anymore after the wash.

I believe it's part of the coating. It seems my ThinkPad doesn't have that 'shimmer' like it use to. :p

Hehe, thanks for the tips guys. I wasn't sure whether it was a T-Series or T61 specific coating as this is my first Thinkpad.

Very, very happy by the way. Only complaint I have is that I might be sending it back for a mobo fix. Having the BSOD when doing anything with high intensive graphics which multiple people claimed Lenovo changed their mobo and it fixed the problem. Apparently the 2 DIMM slots are causing some sort of problem when dealing with games/3dmark? Not sure, but hopefully I can get this sorted out.

Anyways, thanks again for the advice. Wasn't sure whether soap would harm the surface or not. :)

When I first got my x60s, I thought my wife had spilled some of that glitter makeup on the cover!! LOL!! But now, I know better. :)

    LOL!

She spilled it and then evenly distributed it across the lid? :p

She applies that glittery stuff with a brush and it can get everywhere sometimes. One night, the dresser table top was sprinkled with a fine coat ...pretty evenly distributed too. It looked kind of nice so I just left it there!!
