I am thinking about purchasing a IBM ThinkPad T41 to replace a Sony VAIO that I'm unhappy with. Since I will most likely be getting a used one, I was curious about a few things:

1.) On the IBM website, I noticed that for the T41, it lists the wireless cards were an option. I was wondering if the default configuration for this laptop they sold included the wireless option and in order to opt out of getting it, you'd have to customize it? I am wondering this because for their newer machines, they come with some optional features by default and you would save money if you got rid of it in the customization page.

2.) If a T41 comes without an integrated wireless card, am I stuck with having to use a PCMIA one or can I easily install an internal one myself?

3.) Do the UltraBay support the same kind of hard drive that is used for the main system? Will the UltraBay hard drive show up as a separate drive in Windows? And what kind of hard drives do T41s use?

4.) And finally, if the BIOS was password protected by a previous owner, is it easily resettable it to get rid of the password?

    1) I would imagine that IBM took the card out of the laptop they're selling you in order to possibly make more money off of you by making you buy the card from them.

    2) You can either buy a wireless card that will fit into the PCMCIA slot, or you can easily buy an internal card and slip it in.

    3) Yes, using the Ultrabay Slim HDD adapter. It will show up as a separate drive. I believe that they use a standard 2.5" ATA drive, but I may be wrong.

    4) I do not think so.

If any of this is wrong, feel free to correct me.

If the BIOS has a power on password yes, but if it has a supervisor password no; just move on because the only way to remove that is to replace the system board. If your going to purchase it you better make sure that BIOS password is NOT supervisor.

If you have the machine type and model or the serial # you can look it up on the Lenovo site and see what that system came with.

If it does not have a WIFI card a PC card will work or you can easily intall the internal one.

cool thanks guys for the info... got my IBM and I love it :) Luckily, none of the problems I worried about -- it has internal wi-fi, there is no BIOS password

Best laptop i've owned which were: Toshiba Satellite M-Series and Sony VAIO N-Series. Maybe it's the first laptop i've owned smaller than 15.4" Widescreen... Maybe i'm giving into all this hype over its solid design i dunno lol XD
