I recently purchased a Lenovo 3000 n100 notebook. I have some questions about it I hope you guys can help me out with. (120gb memory, 1 gb ram).

    1) Every time I first turn on the notebook, it takes a long time for everything to start up. Once the desktop pops up it takes about 3 minutes to get to the point where I can freely click things without it loading. I dont have this problem if I open it after it has been hybernating though. Is this normal? I thought a brand new laptop would take no time to start up. (It also takes about 3 minutes or so to completely sut down).

    2) I have used my college campus' wireless connection about twice now, but today when I was in one of the classrooms it wouldnt work. I think some of the other student on laptops were using the connection, but I couldnt get it. Is there a way to make it so that my laptop automatically connects to my college network when I get withig range? I think it is odd that I hae to manually do it every time.

    3) This isn't as important, but is there a way to make it so that I have no passowrd but I do have to swipe my fingerprint to login? I like the idea of my fingerprint being the only thing guarding my desktop.

    4) How do I usethe webcam. It looks really cool and I wnat to take it for a test drive but I dont know what program to use to try it out.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Go into msconfig and see what else is turning with Windows. Turn off the ones you don't want. You might want to update your wirless drivers as a place to start. If the fingerprint reader were to break and you had no password, you'd be hosed. As I recall there is an app for using the camera.

    New question:

New Question) I just went into a local coffee shop that has free wifi since my internet connection at home is down, and i got connected to their internet. When I opened IE though, it took me to the coffee shop's page of terms. I clicked agree at the bottom, but when it reloaded, the exact same page came up. No matter how many times I clicked agree it wouldnt let me go to any internet page ut the terms for the coffee shop. Anyone have any clue why it did this?

Okay, I'll try to answer these questions also

    1. The long startup time can be somewhat normal, especially for a brand new laptop. OEMs ship their laptops generally with a lot of software. In the case of Lenovo, or, more specifically, from my experience with my T60 there was a lot of software, ESPECIALLY ThinkVantage software. Now, you dont necessarily HAVE to use and keep all of it. I removed pretty much everything except for Access Connections, the Hard Drive Protection, and Thinkpad Configuration with System Update. You can do like what ZaZ said and look under MsConfig to change the startup options. You could also remove programs you do not use, as some fo them may start on startup and further delay your boot times. One last option you may want to consider is BootVis. It is a free tool. It is kind of complicated to use, but once you look up how to use it, it isn't that hard. HOWEVER, BootVis is meant strictly for all the loading BEFORE you get into Windows, aka, all the stuff that goes on while you see the Windows Logo and the loading bar (before the welcome screen).
    2. The wireless automatic connections... I do believe that if you disable Access Connections and let Windows manage your wireless that it will automatically connect to any network that is within range and not secured. I have not exactly tried this myself though. Access Connections tries to keep things to your settings, so for example I myself live on the University campus. I have it set to the University's SSID and it auto-connects when I turn on my laptop. however, if I'm at home back in Sacramento I have to change the profile so it doesn't keep on looking for the school's wireless SSID when I'm nowhere near it. Short Version: Let windows manage your wireless.

    3. If your computer has the fingerprint reader yes you can set it up. I believe thats part of the Client Security Solution where you swipe your finger to log on, no passwords necessary. You DO need, however, to set up a password to get into the Client Security Solution area to manage your fingerprints and such.

    4. If you are running windows xp, go to My Computer. Under the drives, there should be another section I believe titled 'Communications Devices', and you should see the webcam under there. Double click it and it will start it. You should see a small preview window, and then you can take the picture. There are other programs out there as well, but Lenovo should have bundled it with some sort of software also....

As for the laptop coffee shop, I do not know. That may be an issue with their network.

Awesome. Thank you so much for al your help. I did think of oe more question though (sorry, I'm just trying to figure everything out.)

New Question) I am running vista, and the first time I clicked start and games, I dragged solitaire to the desktop. I recently deleted the desktop shortcut, but now the game doesnt appear in the games start list. I can get to it by searching for it, but is there a way to put it back on the list? Same thing with Microsoft Word.

Also, my right clicker isnt working. I looked under "mouse" in the control panel but I cant find out how to get it back on. Could it just be broken?
