I recently purchased the T420, I'm hoping it will last me until I graduate in April of 2014.
This is the exact build I bought.
Do you think the T420 will last that long if I use it for basic educational purposes in addition to YouTube and Facebook between classes? (I'm a History Major and German Language Minor, so not alot of stress on it, just basic office and any programs I need to run for German).
How is the fan on this unit? I have seen some people with a quiet fan and some with a loud fan.
How is the case on the T420, my previous laptop was in a sleeve in my bag and it got pressure marks on the screen. Is there any hard sleeve you can recommend for this unit?

I bought my thinkpad T400 in August 2008 and it still looks the same as when I bought it.
Get this for the backpack:

They are expensive but they are made to last a long time. -
What do you mean by pressure marks?
-
HP's answer on pressure marks are pressure on the lid of the laptop causing something with the filter causing a discoloration in pixels.
The laptop is still good, and I will use it as a personal laptop. -
Another questions, because I really want this computer to last. If I take this computer from class to class is it better to turn it off and then back on? or should I put it in standby?
-
-
I never shut off the computer, it's either on or in standby. It's a lot more convenient to leave your windows and programs open. -
Short of drowning the darn thing it should survive. My T400 has survived getting dropped, kicked, stepped on, punched, slapped, and was used to make sandwiches. Whether or not it will look good is another thing, but it will survive.
The important thing is to not run the battery to 0 too often. I've gone from 5% to 11% wear that way. -
Expensive like you said, but I'm a buy once and done kind of guy. Quality is worth it. -
