    Hi,

I am about to pull the trigger on a Y580. It is the model with 3610qm, 8GB RAM, 750GB HD, the 1080p screen and Windows 7 because that's what's available on my country (and at a higher price too) and I have a couple of questions.

    1. Does this model have any spare RAM slots or are they all filled up?
    2. Are there any known issues with the Y580? Any showstoppers?
    3. I plan to wipe it out as soon as I get it and install Windows 8 from scratch, I've seen a few help threads about it but are there any problems with it?
    4. I also plan to get a Samsung Pm800 128gb mSATA drive and probably use it for cache or main system drive. Do you know this mSSD model? Is it any good? Any recommendations on the setup caching vs system drive?
    5. It now seems Lenovo is discontinuing the Y580. I am not interested in the Y500. Do you think Lenovo will sell a replacement for the Y580 that is not the Y500 soon? Should I wait?

    Thank you very much.

Not to sound like a jerk and maybe it's a daunting task, but there is a thread on this forum with more than 2400 posts that would answer every question you could possibly have about the y580.

Might take some time, but scan through it. You'll be better off and will have the information you need faster than waiting for people to reply to this thread.

The biggest problem with doing a clean install of Windows 8 is that you need to have the installation media either on a DVD or bootable USB flash drive. You're not gonna be able to get this legally unless you're a TechNet/MSDN subscriber or can get the physical DVD from another source. The .iso file is no longer legally hosted on the interwebs like it was for Windows 7. I'm receiving my Y500 soon and this is a major problem I've run into.

Don't get that God-knows-what Samsung SSD. I've never even heard of that thing and had to Google it. It's a first-generation mSATA SSD on an outdated 3 Gb/s bus and is literally like 4 years old. The first-generation mSATA SSD's were a far cry from the standard 2.5'' ones back in the day. Current generation ones are much closer, if not identical, to their full-sized brethren.

Go for a 128GB or 256GB Crucial m4 mSATA SSD. It's the one I'm getting after I receive my Y500. It's the best mSATA drive on the market and also has the lowest cost per GB. It performs identically to their super-popular regular m4, which is one of the fastest and most reliable drives using the Marvell controller. You really can't go wrong with it.

Oh yeah, and use the SSD as a boot drive for the OS and applications/games since it's big enough. You'd be wasting all that speed if you used it to cache a 5400 RPM drive.

Sorry, but I thought I had replied to you but I didn't. Thank you for your advice. Ultimately I decided not to go with the Y580 and get a Sager instead.

How is the y580? Trying to decide between that and the y500.
I saw it for 910 on this website, pc nation was it? Are they reliable?
I'm assuming single gpu's are more likely to overheat than dual ones so that's why i'm
Considering it. After my gateway fx's vid card burned out i've become more paranoid.
Plus i fee like there will be more support for the 660gtx>650 sli
Only downside is the lack of options without the ultrabay, but i can still have an ssd alongside
    the built in hdd right?
And what do you guys think of the sager that goes for 1110?
I checked the site but it says you need to get the os seperately, but i'm trying
to budget here..plus i'm a bit iffy with the company that makes them mostly b.c i'm
    Not familiar with them.
