I've got an X61 with vista. I've installed Windows XP using the clean install guide, and kept the recovery partition. after the OS install, I've installed R&R and it enabled the Boot recovery again.

My question is: does R&R need the recovery partition or can I delete it now and still keep the basic options in the R&R boot?

I have no need for original discs, since I've got both XP and Vista Cd's if I want to install any of them again.

Yeah, I believe R&R should work with or without the hidden partition.
