    Hi guys,
I need some help here. I received my R40 a week back and let me tell u,its a fantastic machine, lives up to its billing but for the screen. Mine has a 15" XGA and the grapgics controller is ATI Radeon 7500. I was really disappointed with the screen and its view angle.Screen looks grainy and practically I have to sit in front of it to view anything.
I am ready to exchange this system and am currently looking at a R50 with 15" SXGA+ and ATI Radeon 9000(GC). My question here is,will the screen quality improve with better resolution(ie SXGA+) and graphics controller? or all the IBM screens the same in brightness?do u guys recommend an exchange here?
    thanks

    Hi tallguy,
I too have the R40 (2897GAU) and am vvery happy with the display on mine. I have the 15 inch display (1400x1050) and have used it a few times for watching DVDs. I'm not sure what the spec is on off-axis viewing is but I would say mine works very well to plus minus 40-45 degreeson the horizontal and not as well on the vertical, maybe plus minus 25 degrees or so. When I'm using my notebook, of course I'm right in front of it and when watching video I'm still pretty much in fornt of the screen. I guess it could be a problem if I had 10 friends over to watch a DVD on my notebook since some would be off to the side, but I don't think I would even invite friends over to watch videos on my notebook.
Going to a different video chip won't affect the viewing angle at all, it is a function of the LCD display alone. The higher rez screen (1400x1050) may be better. I would go for the higher rez display, there was a reason or two I did not like the R50 though. One was the lack of a 1394 port, the other was the locations of the I/O ports.. I think they were all on one side with none in the back or something like that.

I have the R40 and my resolution is rediculously low (1024 x 768). Is there such a thing as an exchange for a higher model?

bootleg2go- where can i buy a better screen to upgrade?
