Note: I also posted this on tomshardware.com....
I installed a generic pcmcia "cardbus" eSATA in my old R40 running XP pro sp3. I believe the card to be installed correctly because listed in the device manager, the pcmcia adapters list the it as "Texas Instruments PCI-1510 CardBus Controller" and under SCSI and RAID controllers, it named VIA RAID Controller -3249.
The VIA V-RAID software was auto installed at the time when the card was first recognized. And this software can be started but no disk can be recognized attached to any of the 2 eSATA ports on the card.
My external drives are Fantom brand and have been hooked up to my desktop via eSATA and have been working for over a year. I am using the same cables from the desktop with my laptop setup.
My procedure in starting the laptop:
a. before power up, HD is connected to the laptop using a known good eSATA cable
a. turn on Fantom HD
b. turn on laptop wait for boot completion
c. look in "My Computer" for new drive
d. start the V-Raid software to see if drive is listed or recognized there
Is there something else I need to do? I looked in the BIOS settings, there does not seem to be any settings to SATA. I would assume that everything is being taken care within the pcmcia interface and the RAID Via controller.
Can anyone please help?
Thanks,

Are you using additional power cable on your drive?
